Hi! Here is the first draft of an article I am writing about Anime
APA's. Please email me any additions/corrections/suggestions etc...

The final version will reside on romulus.rutgers.edu in our anime
directory and new versions will be posted periodically. (This should
be added to the FAQ as well)

Thanks!

What's an APA?

APA stands for Amateur Press Association, a small group of
"members" that self produces their own fanzine (magazine/apazine).
Unlike conventional fanzines, APAs are produced solely for their
membership. Most APAs have a limited number of members (around 20 is
usually the case), and many have waiting lists to get in (some of the
more popular APAs have very long lists...).
All the members contribute to the APA on a timely basis. There
are usually deadlines for each issue that have to be met!
Members usually have to produce a certain amount of pages of material
every so often (Called Minimum Activity or MINAC). What happens is
that a member writes an article or story, draws art or does translations
or something else creative. This is called a trib or a zine. Generally,
in subsequent tribs, members will add mailing comments (mc's) on everybody's
last trib. They then make X photocopies of every page produced for the APA,
where X is the current number of members in the APA. These tribs are sent to
a person who is known as the Central Mailer (CM) or Master Collator (MC), or
Organizing Editor (OE) who then collates each member's material,
stapling them together to form the current issue and then mails it to
each of the members as well as keeping track of various administrative
tasks. (Another thankless job!).
Members also have to keep a mailing account to cover the
return postage costs of the APA as well as miscellaneous costs such as
envelopes, staples, etc. Financial statements for all of the members
are usually included with each issue.

Failure to do MINAC may be grounds for removal from the APA.
(The idea being that everyone contributes and no one gets a free ride.)

There are many variations on this concept: Some APAs elect
new CM's from the general membership every year. Many APAs are
"devoted" to certain subtopics of interest (ie, Ranma, UY, Macross,
etc.) rather than covering the entire spectrum of Anime.

I'm personally a member of the Ranma APA, Anime Inc. APA, and
Endless Road APA and I'd be happy to answer any questions anyone might have.
