Basically a long thread from the AnimeNation forums, that itself
spawned from a "pairings" thread. The usual ammount of spam, with an
interesting one-and-a-half-year gap in the middle, but a lot of
re-examining of Asuka/Shinji interactions in the series, mainly based
on new scenes in the Director's Cut epiosdes. This is where it
actually starts . . .:

They're incredibly compatible with each other, yet their
personalities make any kind of relationship impossible. This quote
pretty much sums up their mutual problem . . .:
'I hate you, but I need you. I am oblivious to your advances, but
you are everything I've ever dreamed. I want to help you, but all I do
is hurt you. I want all of you, but I would rather die than do it with
you. I give you this caress, but you disgust me.'
There's also the whole "Asuka wants to get boned by Shinji"
conlcusion. It seems extreme, but makes a little too much sense when
you look at it. Scroll down to the bottom of this for a rather
"interesting" interpretation of a scene from ep. 9!:

Still, Asuka/Shiji does seem like a cople made in hell, especially
is you look at End of Evangelion in a certain way. Maybe if they and
the world around them weren't so fucked up they might've worked out .

girl-on-girl action!"
...that pretty much applies to _all_ the characters in EVA, dontcha
think?

Who thinks that Asuka x Shinji would probably end up something like
"The Bitter End"
Shinji would still need to finish evolving to vertebrate status
before anything else would matter.

Probably. ^_^ I once heard EVA described as "People in need of therapy try
to save the world."
-Lord Craxton
Well, *some* of them *think* they're trying to save the world; but the
rest are trying to *end the world*. Or reboot it, or transcend it --
something. How about:
"People in need of therapy try to save the world, but not with much
enthusiasm."
"People in need of therapy act under the apprehension they're trying
to save the world, and if they knew they really weren't, they wouldn't
much care."
"A bunch of unhappy people who'd make therapists very happy are
convinced to try to save the world, but it's all a ruse, and some of
them don't care, and there are also some people who aren't as unhappy
as the rest, but they're also confused."
Challenge for the readers: change this into Vogon poetry. ("Ode to a
small lump of green putty I found in my armpit one midsummer
morning.") Come to think of it, the self-gnawing-off of legs and the
throttling of brains by leaping major intestines would be right in
line with EVA's brazen and uncompromising brutality...

Asuka is taunting Shinji with her sexuality and putting down his
masculinity, in the hope that he'll snap, force her up against the
wall, rip her clothes and treat her like a whore.
Bah. We're talking about a story that is both (a) sci-fi and (b)
Japanese. Both categories have a long and storied (if not precisely
respectable) history of sex between humans and invertebrates.
OTOH, Shinji may *be* an invertebrate, but he doesn't have *nearly*
enough limbs to qualify on the Bug Eyed Monster sexiness scale.
