Supposed to be a sign of defiance.

Of course, I'd classify saying "f*** you" with a hand gesture as "defiant", but
in Japan it has less....vulgar....overtones. I'd still cream the person doing
it anyway...if that's what you're getting at. ^_^

Not to start a "favorite bird flipping moments" thread :) but...

My favorive flipping-the-bird-scene is from Macross Plus, where Isamu
enthusiastically flips the bird to the Colonel (through his office door)
after being lectured about his stupidity. Hilarious!

Although, at this point, I'd also mention Fujiko's distinctly American
response to a truck driver (and in English) from "Lupin III: From Russia

Well, since it's going...

I have two favorite birdflipping moments.

One is in the Ranma 1/2 OAV "The One To Carry On, Part Two"...who could
forget Ryouga's sideline antics during the final battle between Ranma
and Akane and the orphans...

"Ranma, there's just one thing I wanna say to you!" .!. ^_^

The other is when Chibi Trunks flipped off Burori.

My favorite "finger" scene is in Ranma 1/2 OAV 5. Not only does Ryouga
flip the bird at Ranma, but he simultaneously does the "right palm on
left bicep, raise left elbow" gesture. The quotation: "I got one thing
to say to you, Ranma..."

Honorable mention: Rin at the very end of Fairy Princess Ren episode 1.
A complete mis-use of the gesture if I ever did see one.

Where is that scene? I must've missed it.

Anyway, check out this picture and tell me which finger you think Akane is
holding up at Ranma-chan.

How about Yuugen Kaisha? And I think Ryoko did it on one of the original
Tenchi LD covers. In the US they edited it out...

I've also seen Ryoko do it in a promo picture and Ayaka from Phantom

And then there's Ranma-chan flipping off Akane (To Akane!?!?How dare she
do that!) in the tennis match in Manga vol. 11

Of course, that's manga, so I guess it doesn't count.

In "Dangaioh", Pai Thunder does that gesture as well, somewhere in the
beginning or middle.

Yup, it was to Akane in the tennis match. But I think that's only in the
manga.

And since I had no idea what the gesture meant to the japanese befor this
thread, i was kind of surprised at Akane's lack of reaction.

I'm thinkin' (an' muh head hurts :) that Ranma was using it to emphasize
what his plans for Happosai were. I've noted that often in manga the gesture
is not necessarily directed at a person but to emphasize an angry moment.
(tho' there have been notable exceptions...:)

Somehow I'm not--even though I don't know what the middle finger gesture
means to the Japanese.

I sorta figured that, since the gesture was made while Ranma was talking
about Happosai, that she was indicating what was going to happen to the
old pervert.

The gesture isn't even necessarily obscene or offensive. I can
think of a particular manga where a 10-year old character gave the
finger, with the approximate meaning of "Oh, stop fooling around!"

I guess it doesn't carry much of the same significance in Japan as it
might in the U.S.

I got all sorts of stares for my Van Halen Balance Tour shirt but the
guy wearing a shirt with the 'f' word in big type didn't on the

In Newtype 97.05, page 57, there is a half-page manga talking about
"tori-zaka", apparently a translation of "flipping the bird", showing some
little runt kid innocently flipping off an American while saying "hello"
and then getting beat up. I haven't gotten very far in trying to
translate it, but the second panel shows a guy (the kid 10 years later?)
wearing an "ABUNAI!" t-shirt. It definitely gets the idea across.

It certainly looks like it has nowhere near the meaning in Japan that it
has here in the US of A. I need to do translation on the second row of
panels, 'cuz that's where I think it tells the Japanese perspective.
