I have been loking at canister filters and am wondering if the Micron
Cartridge is really cleanable in the Magnum filters. The ads say they
are but in practice I can't see getting them clean since they are so
finely meshed.

So is there anyone out there that cleans theirs and how many times do
you clean them before replacing?

TIA,

No longer use my Magnum much but in the past used them a lot. The Micron
Cartridge was cleaned by back flushing using a high pressure water flow. If
very clogged, you can clean it with bleach and rinse very well - or
neutralize the chlorine.

Let it soak overnight in a mixture of 25% javel 75% water.
Rince VERY WELL after.

I clean my micron cartridge about once every two weeks. I use the blue foam
sleeve to extend the time between cleaning a bit. Rince the catridge under
running water to loosen the larger chunks of yuck, then soak it overnight in a
solution of four parts water one part bleach. Riise the bleach off well with
running water, until the chlorine smell is gone, then squirt it down with your
favorite chlorine remover and let it dry overnight. I use two micron
cartridges in rotation (one in use, one in cleaning), and haven't needed to
replace one in several years.

I clean mine by rinsing it off then soaking it overnight in a mixture of 1/3
bleach to 2/3 water. I then rinse it off again. Finally I soak it in water
with a lot of chlorine remover added. I don't use mine very much but it has
been cleaned about 2 dozen times over the past few years. It is only now
starting to wear out.

I would concur except to say that with a 1:4 or 1:3 mixture of
bleach:water you shouldn't have to soak it for more than an hour or two.

That's a pretty small caveat given how durable those cartridges are -
you probably will get 2 to 3 years out of them even if you over-bleach.

I would second the purchase of a second pleated filter so you can keep
them in rotation.

This also allows plenty of time after the bleaching for any residual
bleach to gas off before the cleaned cartridge goes back into service.
No Cl neutralizers needed!

I would also emphasize rinsing the cartridge very well BEFORE and AfTER bleaching.

Lastly, the first thing you can expect to go is the rubbery part of the
filter - mine eventually got so hard and shrank just a bit so I couldn't
fit it onto the filter anymore.

P.S. Both Magnums have been demoted to circulation duty now. I have no
artificial filtration on my 30gal Planted tank or my 75 gal Oscar tank.
