slapped it together and took it for a ride around the block to adjust
things like seat, stem, etc.
it's a 56cm.. and i don't really have more than 1cm of standover (in
street shoes) but the cockpit is about as small as i can take (i'm
5'11 with a PBH of about 84.5 - all torso).
here are some low-rez pics i took with my iphone
http://paradigmpusher.com/Cycling/Sam_Hillborne.html
so far it feels great - lighter and much snappier than i expected,
rather similar to the XO-1 that i sold to Mitch a couple weeks ago, to
fund this, but bigger/sturdier/smoother on the 700C Schwalbes.
the only issue at the moment is the saddle just isn't quite far enough
back.. i could use another cm or two, but the Flyer Special is back as
far as it goes.. look like i'll be ordering a new seatpost shortly.
the bars are also adjusted all the way up to the max height line, but
they feel pretty good there.
thanks to Grant and Jay for all the advice on sizing, parts, etc.. my
dream bike made it into reality :)
now i just gotta get some racks and setback seatpost, i think.
cheers,
andrew

i love the bullmoosies, though they aren't nearly as wide as i expected from the description/pics on the Riv website, but they feel great - especially with the woodies. tons of "leverage" - and extremely comfy setup.
unfortunately i won't be able to join y'all for the SoCal ride this weekend - moving to a new apartment that day - but i'll do my best to make the next one. got one scheduled for March yet? :)
a new seatpost is definitely in my future.. i'm a little surprised that Rivendell doesn't stock/recommend an affordable one with more setback, since they are fans of Brooks saddles and this seems to be a common issue with Brooks. of course, not everyone is mostly torso, like me. i don't think i can afford the $200 Nitto one, but the one Clyde suggests looks pretty good, and i may have a line on another Nitto for much cheaper.
i'm not sure how i feel about the Tectro calipers yet - at first impression they don't have nearly the stopping power i expected (compared to the sidepulls on my late XO-1 or discs on my Gary Fisher) but it's mostly the rear brake that seems rather anemic, so it may just need some breaking in, so to speak. i think it's adjusted fine, but i'll tinker with it some if it doesn't improve in the first 10 miles or so.
btw.. how long does it take to get un-moderated here? i've been posting for a few weeks, and haven't tried to send one spam ;)
best,
andrew

This VO seatpost is in the mail to me and should be here in a couple
of days. The set back issue is a common one and I'm dealing with it on
my Casseroll right now.
If I like it I'll order another one for the XO-1 and Atlantis.

They also have a Nitto Crystal Fellow for a little more that looks
similar in set back.
Nice bike. Mitch

I have the VO seatpost on my 20 year old beater that needed more
setback with a Brooks, and it's a beautiful post that works great.
Would like to get a Nitto at some point, but I think this one has more
setback than any of the Nittos except the lugged "Wayback".
Gernot
they are actually out of stock right now - i tried to buy one yesterday and discovered that.. someone on the list has one for sale, but i've got a couple of other options i'm considering..
a VO might end up on a stripped down build if i can find a used 58cm Quickbeam or Atlantis frame, though ;)

I agree with your assessment of the Tektro's being kinda wimpy, esp in
the rear. I was going to experiment with a different pad on my orange
56cm Sam. Otherwise, I have a set of Paul's I might put on it
instead.
Have also been using the Tektro 720's on my Hillborne since the first
build. Have had no problems with stopping issues. Besides pad
changing, might want to experiment with the height of the straddle
cable.

re the Tectros.. i figured out that the cable housing wasn't seated properly where it went into the grip housing, and fixing that has given me a bit more rear braking power.. they do stop fine; what i'm finding is that canitlever breaking seems to be more directly related to transfer of hand power than other brakes i've had.. e.g. if i squeeze harder i stop faster (true with all, but seems to be moreso with this setup).
so ya.. i'm happy with the Tectros functionally.. and i think they look pretty damn cool too :)
cheers,
andrew
