(Sorry if this has been covered... when I searched I didn't find
anything.)

In the PBP Ride Regulations, Article 2: Conditions of Entry states
that "Riders must supply a medical certificate less than three months
old, attesting that they are physically capable of covering 1200 km
without any risk to their health."

Does anyone have information about what form this certificate should
take? Is it simply a letter on my physician's letterhead? Is there
particular language that should be included?

Thanks, in advance, for all help.

Doger,

My "medical certicate" for PBP03 (on Doctor's letterhead) read:
" Mr. Rosenbauer is fit to participate in a 750 mile bike ride."

... strictly speaking, he was off by a couple of miles since the course was
something like 1250K ;)
And fortunately, there is no sanity check required.

I just had my doctor sign a letter saying that I was in fine shape to ride the event. I wrote it, he signed it. Very easy.

My doctor wrote it and it's illegible.  But it was good enough in '03 and his handwriting hasn't improved with age.

So when you go to your doctor and tell him/her that you need a certificate
stating you can do a 1200km ride without risk to your health - how would
he/she know??? Do they ask you about your training and qualifiers and such?

First you have to probably have to explain what 1200km is and then that you
plan to do it in 3 days and change, and then you have to stop the page to
the psych ward.

In 99, we had a bunch of doctors doing brevets with us. One of them wrote
our certificates - because who was going to know better than the doctor I
did all my qualifiers with. I think we got two versions. One said, "John and
Pamela finished all the qualifiers fresher than me..." The one we sent in
had more standard language.

I know many people just wrote their own - not that I would suggest anyone do
that :-)

Sounds like a standard CYA document by the PBP. Something their
lawyers like them to have on file. just in case.

It's common practice among major French cycling events. Nothing
special. The two times I asked a doctor in my cycling club to write
the certificate. Nowadays I take a more special approach, two of my
ex-girlfriends are doctors. One of them wrote the certificate last
year. She's a psychiatrists, probably better suited to judge my
sanity in taking part in such an event ;)

Basically an excuse to get a physical...you should get one every coupla years anyway (or yearly when you reach my age! ;-) ).

In '03, my doc basically just wrote "Paul is healthy enough to
participate in a 1200km ride". Sure...he has no idea if you can
finish, but he is certifying that there is no good reason for you not
to start (except for the sanity issue ;-) ).

I took my polar charts from my HR monitor on my 600k with me to show him, but he wasn't the slightest bit interested in my training, just my health.

I've had the same requirement when I've signed up for treking in the
Himalya's with a US based treking agent. Of course if you go over
there and find a local guide, he won't care, he'll just take your
money! ;-) So far, I've never had a bike touring company ask me for the same, but I guess that's because they usually do SAG.

Thanks, all, for the info. See you in Paris (hopefully I'm not jinxing
my qualifiers by saying that)!

My parents are "doctors". Can I get them to write the letter?
My dad and stepmother have their PhD's in musicology; my mom's doctorate is in music composition.
But they all probably know me well enough to know that I am fully insane enough to go to PBP! :)

But that would be more than 3 months prior to PBP, unless you post-
dated it.
