Given that the QSB project is led by the creator of Quicksilver (hi
alc0r), is the app meant to ultimately supersede Quicksilver?

We'll see how it goes! Let us know what functionality in particular
you are looking for and it'll help us guide the project.

The ability to "copy to clipboard" phone numbers directly (like QS)
would be great.

I would love to see:
*Proxy objects (Qs feature)
*Access to applications menu bar options (Qs feature)
*access to applications applescript library:
<first pane>
iTunes
<second pane>
get title of currently playing song
<third pane>
Frontmost chat in iChat

That was a horrible example, but I can imagine a lot of cool stuff
could be done that way

Good point. You have an entire screen to work with.

QS has a few options that help save time with displaying its window.
Would it be possible to have the same options in QSB, in order to
remove the fade-in/out effects that delay the full display of the
window?

Another cool thing in QS is the ability to set keyboard shortcuts (I
use Cmmd-Enter to play/pause iTunes). This feature is the only thing
for which I run QS at the moment--every other feature I use is already
in QSB.

I really look forward to QSB (I'd just like the iTunes plugin to stop
crashing the full app, of course, see recent issue posting). It's a
terrific application.

We know that you (NJ) have been working on code for the next version
of Quicksilver (or a least frameworks for it?).
So is this (QSB) what you've been working on that you've hinted at in
the past, or is this completely separate to the work you've been doing
on new work related to Quicksilver? :)

As well wanting to know that I'm requesting pretty much all of the
cool features from Quicksilver:

Add specific folder/sources
The 'comma trick'
Triggers
Copy files/ move files etc.

I second (third?) the need for triggers. Very convenient QS feature.

Some useful Quicksilver features, in addition to the ones already
listed:

* Send current selection (Finder objects, text, etc.) to Quicksilver
* Open an application by choosing it with Quicksilver and dragging a
selection onto it
* Open with...
* Safari history
* File manipulation actions (move, delete, copy, etc.)
* Timers

Also, in terms of file navigation, in QSB clicking right on a folder
shows both enclosed Finder items and actions for the folder, which is
a bit less clean than in Quicksilver. Sometimes I just want to
navigate files, and the actions get in the way.

Anyhow, I don't mean to sound so needy! The app already rocks. Great
job. Looking forward to new updates!

The source tree looks very different from my uninformed eyes. QSB uses
something called Vermilion for the data sources, whereas Quicksilver
Trunk uses Crucible (general functions), catalyst (triggers) and
Elements (plugins).

I really doubt QSB will get QS features. I suspect development of QSB
is guided by both google and cross-platform integration at its core.
QS took Apple's APIs to the limit, and was guided by magic voodoo ;-)
I'l love to be proved wrong and see Elements, ported QS plugins &
Catylyst make it into the QSB space. Comma trick and more robust verbs
would be brilliant too...

Are there plans to allow users to use Mail.app instead of Gmail? I
have my gmail in mail.app, but I also want to use it with my work
email and signatures. Also Alcor is there a way that you could
implement some of the features of Firefox's Ubiquity (https://
wiki.mozilla.org/Labs/Ubiquity/Latest_Ubiquity_User_Tutorial) into
this or would that create too much bloat?

Thanks for your hard work, Im really liking this new app.

Also, after a short time the CPU % jumps up to near 100%, I guess its
possible its just indexing? Is this normal, if so it should be a
warning on the Code page before downloading. Thankfully its not making
my machine lag, but Im lucky enough to be on a new 15'' MBP, others
may not have the resources I do.

It's true. In terms of file navigation the distinct 3-pane system of
QS gives a lot more clarity to the interface and also in terms of
keystrokes where tabbing to an action and using the right arrow for
navigation are distinct.

Not really a fan of having to click to see more at the bottom of a
list :(

The 100% CPU spin should not be happening. Can you open up "Activity

I want an updated, non-abandonware Quicksilver. I'm perfectly willing
to pay for it, too.

Quicksilver really changed the way I use my Mac. Then, for whatever
reasons, you decided to go and do other things.

That's your right, but IMHO it's grossly irresponsible to create
something like Quicksilver, which fundamentally alters the paradigm of
how one uses his computer, and then just walk away from it. I would
be willing to *pay* for a commercial version of Quicksilver, as would
many, many Mac users, but I wasn't given that option.

So, I'm in the peculiar position of being grateful for a fabulous
piece of open-source software, while at the same time feeling bitter
and, to be honest with you, quite angry at the callous disregard you
showed for your user base by just walking away from Quicksilver
without ensuring it remained on a firm footing, or for being open and
transparent about your plans for the future in this regard. At the
very least, you should've explored the possibility of a commercial
release of Quicksilver; even if you decided against doing so, you
should've been honest and open and communicative with your user base,
which you signally failed to do. Extremely unprofessional.

So, thanks for Quicksilver, and no thanks for abandoning it and
leaving your user-base in the lurch. Please don't play the 'what
features do you want?' game, just re-implement Quicksilver in a
maintained/maintainable new form.

Wow, what an ass post Roland.

QS did die, and sure, the developer could have communicated better
with his user base, but your accusations are way out of line.

QS was an experimental piece of software that never got out of beta.
Sometimes this is the case with truly innovative things, because they
are experimental and innovative, there are problems with them, which
is what I imagine what happened to QS.

It would be a dark day for innovation in software if every developer
who ever released a freeware beta thought their users would end up
angry and bitter with them if the software doesn't achieve all of
their expectations of it. And quite frankly if you are going to get
bitter about freeware beta software I suggest you never beta test.

I don't feel he callously abandoned it the way you say either, he
opened the source for anyone to pick up on the work he started.

We all wanted QS to continue to be developed but you know what, not
everything turns out the way we want it to. And look at this! Here is
a chance to be a part of a new QS like app and community from the
ground up, with an enthusiastic developer working for an understanding
company, wanting your input and you can't appreciate it because of
your own misery.

Enough of that as for QSB, i'm excited! The features of QS I would
really love (most stated already) ...

Proxy object (like current selection etc) great extension to the mac
os
Triggers or shortcuts or whatever you call them :)
Even better e-mail integration would be great!
File manipulation

Much respect

This really isn't the right group for your post; try a discussion
group for <http://code.google.com/p/blacktree-alchemy/>, which is the
Google Code project for Quicksilver. The fact that you have a bone to
pick with someone who happens to be a developer of QSB doesn't make it
relevant to discussion of QSB.

Glad to see Alcor back! here are a bunch of features I would love to
see:

- searching apps by abbreviations ("fx" for Firefox and "tm" for
TextMate, in addition to the forward-match "fi" or "te")
- the "comma trick"
- evocation by tapping on a single modifier key
- full CJK double-byte language support (this remained unsupported in
QS)

many (especially the abbreviation search) are features I depend on
completely, yet are unavailable in most similar products like
Spotlight or Google Desktop. It would be absolutely delightful to see
it in QSB!

While I began an overhaul of QS in the repository you speak of, the
majority of my focus in the last year has been on QSB.

It is safe to assume that this will continue to be the case, and while
I'm happy to support anyone who wants to use the quicksilver codebase,
I will devoting my efforts exclusively on the design of QSB going
forward.

That said, I still have an interest in many of the pieces of
functionality that you are all describing, and have a ongoing interest
in finding a way to either support or improve upon them.

Thanks so much for your reply & clarification. I'm under the
understanding that a lot of your work on Elements has been in private
repositories. Are you planning on making that code open source the
same way Alchemy was open sourced?

First impressions:
Very nice start!

Feature requests:
• proxies
• clipboard history
• Shelf

I would say triggers too, but so much of what I had built triggers for
(image search, google search, wikipedia search) is already built into
QSB. That said, it would probably still be pretty useful to have.

Never mind. I restarted my machine and either that or the restart of
iTunes itself stopped this from happening. The result is now a nice
dynamically-generated playlist a la LaunchBar.

Thank you for QSB. I'm enjoying it immensely.

One thing I would like to see (and maybe it is there I just have not
figured it out yet.) is the ability to enter a folder (or my desktop)
and select all or some items and move them to another just like we
could in QS

Thanks I have been using it since I read about it on Lifehacker and so
far it is going well. I do still keep QS running out of habit I think
but have not really used it I have been forcing myself to use this.
keep it up!

alc0r - woohoo! thanks for the new toy. (Just gotta train myself to
use it in place of Quicksilver now...)

As others have mentioned, file manipulations (move, copy, delete, etc)
would be a huge win.

#1 for me however, is the ability to access my clipboard history, and
paste any of my last 25 selected clipboard entries wherever my cursor
is focused.
I believe in Quicksilver, it looked like:
Clipboard History -> Show Contents
I've got a screencast of the ideal functionality (linked to a trigger
- another invaluable feature) over on theappleblog -
http://media.theappleblog.com/screencasts/qs-clipboard.mov

Glad you're back, thanks for the exciting new work.

oh, and Rolando, take a break man, you didn't pay for anything, it was
in beta for a reason, case closed.
Quicksilver still works as needed for crying out loud!

Thanks for your work on QSB, and on Quicksilver. The recent update
fixed the persistent hang that had prevented me from giving QSB a try.

I second the requests for:
* triggers
* proxy objects
* comma trick
* more verbs (move, copy, open with etc.)
all of which I use dozens of times a day in QS.

I'd also request integration with other OSX programs -- specifically
Path Finder and Yojimbo. I'd love it if QSB's 'Reveal' command could
be routed to Path Finder (instead of the Finder), and for QSB to index
my Yojimbo library. (I store a special subset of my bookmarks in
Yojimbo, so that I don't clog QS's catalog with a million Firefox
bookmarks.)

Isn't YoJimbo indexed by Spotlight? I think the better solution here would be configuration options to filter Spotlight results. I might just file that as an enhancement request. I would use the Spotlight plugin myself (for Evernote), but it returns far too many results right now.
