Hi ,
I am new to the Qilang group but am interested in using Qi/Shen for
mucking about on my hme computer. I understand this is mainly being
progressed by one (very clever) person, and that resources are
limited. I think Qi is a very very tidy language and would love to
see more support for the development of Shen. So understanding that
resources are limited, I have two questions really...

1) is there an estimate on when shen will be released?
2) isn't there some way of releasing shen source so that Dr Tarver can
get additional resource to help with its development while still
leaving the direction of the project under his control, similar to how
clojure is being developed by a group but still under the control of
the inventor. (this may already be happening).

best regards
Colin

I am replying on behalf of Mark:
Due to personal circumstances, the release of Shen will unfortunately
be delayed

Mark will answer this question himself when he is back online!

Ok; I can answer those questions.

Shen is likely to be finished at my end sometime this April. That
means that the spec and the code will be shipped off to Moscow and San
Francisco for porting to Scheme and Javascript respectively. After
that, having successfuly passed two ports, the spec and the code will
be released. So the final date depends more on the porters after this
month rather than me. I would guess this summer will see the
release. After that the development model will become much more open.

The development has been delayed by local circumstances here; 2010
from early to mid saw some very big personal challenges, the death of
my partner in September; a two month appeal for funding and a dose of
flu that lasted a month. Probably the effective working time in 2010
was down to about 2 months. There is nothing the online community
could have done to relieve this situation other than to support the
project financially. They did that and that was very important.

Generally leaving this behind, these local considerations do not apply
as they did, and things are moving much faster now in spring 2011 than
they were in 2010.
