Are there any others in the Portland area interested in exploring the world
of free/low-cost unix clones?

I have Linux up an running, haven't tried BSD386 yet.

Looking for others to swap sw/ horror stories, bounce ideas, etc.

I have also been playing around with Linux. I have MCC-interim 0.97pl2,
H.J. Lu's 0.98 root and base disks available on my BBS, The Digital
Amateur 359-5111. I'm also in the progress of getting the latest
SLS set from tsx-11. Unfortunately, I'm only running at 2400 baud.
The SupraFaxModem is waiting for a new serial card.

Got the MCC system up and running with virtually no problems, but
have been waging war with the HJL setup all weekend. I think I've
got it going now, but had a couple of scares as my MS-DOS partition
has already been trashed by my inept fingers. Looks pretty good. Wish
I had a VGA card that supported X. Ah, well maybe soon.

I have 386BSD running on two systems and have happily junked my System V
distribution. It is GREAT! I have NFS, TCP/IP, SL/IP, and X all running
happily.

I have linux installed on my PC. I use it for developing (uemacs-ing,
gcc-ing, gdb-ing) programs with BIG (>1mb) data. Recently I've been
trying to hack MGR (not X: wrong svga card and not enough disk space).

How large are these files you have for Linux on your BBS? I'm interested
in looking further into this OS, but only have one spare bootable partition
where OS/2 2.0 currently resides.

I'll make sure I do a full backup before trying to install Linux here. I
even did that before installing OS/2 since I had to repartition my hard
drives to make room for it anyway. I can see that I am eventually going to
have to either replace one of my SCSI drives with a larger one or just add
a third one to what I have. Removable media is starting to look more
attractive all the time and prices are coming down fast, especially on the
SyQuest 88 Meg drives.
