* Does commonmap have planet like dumps yet?
* Is this data from "GEODATA TOPO 250K Series 3 - Packaged (Personal
Geodatabase format)" from GA, from what I can tell I must pay $100 for
it from GA, but if this is in common map then you guys must have the
data somewhere, could it be shared?
* What assurances do you have its CC-BY?
Only if you haven't agreed to the CTs.
Looking at http://commonmap.org/?zoom=8&lat=-33.71063&lon=150.45776&layers=B00
national parks in NSW are present. If this data is CC-BY I see no
reason why we can't import this into the OSM database, however I can't
work out where to obtain this data.

Yep, I'm just after the actual data before I can start a discussion
with the various other projects about importing it.

Thanks. I'm interested in obtaining the source data as it was
delivered by GA, and if possible the .osm extracts for the same data
(a planet dump will do), I would also be interested in the process
used to convert from the source data into the database. I'll keep an
eye on that doc.

Excellent. Its a shame the latest ones aren't there, but I synthesis
with your disk space problem.

Ahh I see, it would be better if they just make the DVD available from
their web site. I took a look at one of the mapsheets
https://www.ga.gov.au/products/servlet/controller?event=GEOCAT_DETAILS&catno=64257
I don't think this is NATMAP (this one is raster right?), nor geoMAP
250K, it is GEODATA TOPO 250K...
I'll have to try and contact GA (they may not bite but last time I
emailed them about a similar thing they never replied...) on that page
it says "Unless otherwise noted, all Geoscience Australia material on
this website is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0
Australia Licence.", yet in the zip download there is a copyright
notice which never mentions CC-BY...

That's good enough. Now I just need to get a copy of the NATMAP
Digital Maps 250K and geoMAP 250K dvd contents.

Sort of. We're only in demonstration / proof of concept mode at the
moment. The Planets for the demo data on the commonmap.org home page are at
http://planet.demo.commonmap.org/
I've just had a look at that page again and just noticed I ran out of
disk space there around 28 July last year. So I don't have any
compressed versions of the planets to offer you just now.

We have some contacts in Geoscience Australia who were able to waive the
cost for us - they could see the value of the demonstration. In any
case, the Amazon EC2 services to host CommonMap cost more than that per
month! (donations gratefully accepted of course.)
You can also download the topographic geodata, mapsheet by mapsheet, from
https://www.ga.gov.au/products/servlet/controller?event=DEFINE_PRODUCTS
The DVD is simply all the mapsheets before the slicing and dicing into
mapsheets. I'd guess the $99 is simply the retail marginal cost of
production.

Well, ultimately you have to trust the contributor who asserts it, which
would be me in this case.
However, the following gets you pretty close, as independent proof.
https://www.ga.gov.au/image_cache/GA18751.pdf
http://ga.gov.au/topographic-mapping/digital-topographic-maps/using-attributing-products.html
If that's still not enough you can always contact GA directly. They
don't bite.

You do know about the work I've been doing to host map tiles on
archive.org right?
CommonMap was hosted on the cloud before the brilliant idea of asking
archive.org was mentioned
Definitely a future possibility
