I'm surprised you can view cnn videos at all. I get a message saying

"This CNN.com feature is optimized for Adobe Flash Player version 8 or higher.
You are currently using Flash Player 10".

For sound to work in flash videos on other sites, you need the latest
flash plugin.

Which version of the flash plugin are you using? I have ...
$ strings /usr/lib/opera/plugins/libflashplayer.so |grep Shock
Shockwave Flash 10.0.0 d525

In opera, press F12, or select Tools/Quick Preferences, and ensure
sound in web pages is enabled.

Using Opera 9.52, build 2086 with Mandrvia Linux 2008.1, here.

Yes, cnn.com sucks. It says "You are currently using Flash Player 0" here
with elsewhere working 9.0 r124.

This is a beta.

Nope, this setting has nothing to do with sound in flashapps. Never
enabled it and I can hear every sound.
