Hello, my app has not been available since this morning.

My app's info page:
   http://www.orkut.com/AppInfo.aspx?appId=1078012827336

returns:
"This gadget has not yet cleared the review process"

I believe this is related to the app reviewer bug. This happened a few days ago, and it is happening again now.

My app was approved about 2 years ago, and has been in production since then.

My users can not access my app and are asking me what is going on.

I would really appreciate it, if you could take a look, as soon as it is possible for you.

Thanks in advance and best regards,
Rene Tapia

Thanks for notifying us, René!

We're experimenting with automated bad content detection and your app
is definitely a false positive. The description of your app says
"18+", that might have fooled our automatic reviewer. Your app was
manually cleared and should be visible again in the next few hours.

If anyone else notices that their long-lived apps are suddenly
rejected, please contact us immediately.

Thanks,
Tiago

Hi everyone,

If you have lost some apps, please do just like Prashant did: reply
here in the forum and send us your app ids. It's OK to send me a
private message as long as you also post a reply here, otherwise I'll
never know there's a message for me (because I filter them out). If
you reply publicly, though, anyone can pick that up, if you pm me you
need to wait until I check this forum. :-)

Prashant, if you updated the description of your apps, resubmitting
them should be enough to get them approved again. It was an error on
our side that got your apps unlisted. Let us know if that works for
you.

Thanks,
Tiago

Hi Tiago,

It seems like my app is still blocked for most of my users. I can access my app just fine with my Orkut account, but many users are complaining that they still can not access my app through Orkut.

I contacted one of my users, and she says she has not removed my app, but she still can not access my app in Orkut. Interestingly enough, if I visit her profile it looks like she does not have my app installed at all.

Here is the link to her profile:
http://www.orkut.com/Main#Profile?uid=17322251415439920421

Here is a link to another user with the same problem:
http://www.orkut.com/Main#Profile?uid=269369253208698516

I also noticed a spike in registrations to my app from Facebook, which makes me think that many users that still have no access to my app through Orkut, are registering through Facebook. However, I would much rather have them stay in Orkut, since Orkut is a much better and friendlier platform for developers in my opinion.

Finally, I noticed a big drop in my traffic from Orkut. My traffic in the last three days has been about 25% of what it used to be last Thursday, July 22 (see attached pic).

I hope you can take a look at this issue at your earliest convinience.

Please let me know if there is anything that I can do to help you to solve this issue.

Thanks in advance,
René

Baiju,

I took a look at your app and there could be a bug that's preventing
it from getting added to someone's profile. I'll let you know the
details after a discussion.

René,

I think I see the reason. Please hold on for a while longer, I'll
update you right here.

Thanks,

Hi,

René,

It's the safety filter. An app may possibly not be visible to all
users depending on their safety filters (http://www.google.com/support/
orkut/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=106586), and the applicable safety
restrictions are governed by the content policy (http://www.google.com/
support/orkut/bin/answer.py?answer=16198).

Baiju,

I'll refer you again to the content policy link above. This app has
been marked spam and blacklisted.

Hi Prashant,
I am really sorry to hear that. How do I go about appealing this
and have our application manually re-evaluated ? Our application is
pretty simple, no photos or anything, we simply help people send SMS -
and there shouldn't be any content that violates the policy.we have
cleaned everything that could have caused the automated script to
identify our app as spam. This app has been consistantly top 5-10
apps on Orkut since it's inception with more than 2.5 million user
now. We would really appreciate your help getting this back.

Thanks

Hi Prashant,

Thank you very much for your reply, I gather from your reply that my app was flagged as "Inappropriate Content".

I would like to ask what prompted the decision to flag my app as "Inappropriate Content", after 2 years of being in production?

I would be very grateful if you could let me know the reason why my app was flagged so we can work out a solution.

I would also like to comment, first of all, that your efforts to eliminate bad content are extremely laudable and praiseworthy (and I can definitely relate to your efforts from working on my own app).

However, I think that no matter how refined the automated filter is, there will always be cases where content that the user really wants to see, is flagged as "Inappropriate Content", and if you completely hide it from the user, this will surely lead to user frustration.

I think a much better approach is to *warn* the user about "Inappropriate Content", but let him make the final decision. I think YouTube handled this very well, because you can search, and the results will contain videos that some users would consider inappropriate, but if you click on one of this videos, before showing the video, you are warned that this video may be considered inappropriate by some users, and you are given the choice of whether you want to see it or not.

Anyway, here are some comments from my users, where you can see for yourself the confusion and frustration of users when the content is hidden (you can also see them here http://www.orkut.com/Main#Scrapbook?uid=7899678479676107042):

I agree with René. This is already how inappropriate profile are
handled in orkut itself: the user receives a warning, but he can
choose to see the content anyway.

About the same thread (Inappropriate Content)... Where users can set
up the safety filter in new Orkut? I only see the option in old orkut

Hello everyone,

Yes, sorry for all this trouble. As you may guess, we're in the
process of refining our app policies and it's possible that some of
these false positives are its unfortunate result. If you give us some
time, we'll go individually through these apps and have them reviewed
by our abuse teams and get back to you.

@Bruno, yes, that's the safety filter I was talking about.

Thanks much for your patience guys!

Hi Prashant,

We would like to know whether you got a chance to review the SMS-
Me app ? It has been down for more than 3 weeks now and we would
really appreciate it if the application can be reviewed and restored
at the earliest, as the number of users requesting us for the same, is
growing in number day by day.
In case if it is going to take time, we would like to know at least

are still unaware of the reasons and actions to be taken.

Hi Prashant,

Same here. I have been thinking about the "Inappropriate Content" issue, and the only thing I can think of that could violate the policies in my app, is the video-chat.

Even though we clearly state that nudity is not allowed, unfortunately a few users abuse the video feature. The problem with live video, is that it is not possible for us to monitor live video 24 hrs. a day. However, I would like to invite you to enter my app (http://www.orkut.com/AppInfo.aspx?appId=1078012827336) and see that the vast majority of users do not abuse the video-feature and just want to have a nice chat.

Anyway, I want to let you know that it is not our intention to violate the policies, and that if video-chat is the reason why my app was flagged as "Inappropriate Content", I would remove the video-chat feature from my app immediately.

I know you must be super busy, but I would really appreciate it if you, or your abuse teams, could get back to me so I can address any policy issues, and remove the "Inappropriate Content" flag from my app, or if you could at least give us an estimate of when do you think you could get back to us so we can make plans accordingly.

Here are some more comments from Orkut users, who can not find my app:
http://www.google.com/support/orkut/bin/search.py?hl=pt-BR&forum=1&query=maxi+more:forum

Thanks in advance and best regards,

René, Baiju, Bruno,

Sorry for the long delay. Like I said last time, we're still working
on framing and refining our policies.

In the meanwhile, I just took a last look at all your apps and re-
enabled them. And we agree, it's not fair at all to disable your apps
without publishing clear guidelines or sufficiently warning you in
advance, that was our mistake. MaxiAmigos, SMS-Me and the number of
apps Bruno had mentioned should all be now available to everyone. I'm
really sorry for the loss this must have meant to you all.

@René: Really appreciate your detailed analysis and explanation on
both the occasions, thank you! Let's all co-operate to keep orkut as
friendly and clean as we can. I'll update this forum once we have
finalised how our policies should ideally look like.

Hi Prashant,

It seems like my app is still disabled.

It is hidden if safety filter is set "do not show inappropriate content".

Thanks,
René

Hi Prashant,

Thank you very much.We really appreciate your help.As you said
please give a notification in advance to the developers before
disabling the apps, which would eliminate all this trouble.

Thanks again,

Hi Prashant,

Thank you for re-enabling the apps!
It still hidden for me too if safety filter is set "do not show
inappropriate content". We should expect some delay in this proccess?

Thanks in advance,

René,

That's surprisingly _not_ my experience – I see your app all right
despite that setting. But I still messed a bit again with your app's
back-end settings, can you please re-check?

Oops!

My bad, I hadn't tried adding the apps to my profile. René, you're
right. Same for Bruno's app "Sou Honduras". This is weird, need to get
this checked.

Hi Prashant,

It has been more than three weeks since my app got disabled.

I was wondering if you had a chance to take a look at this.

Do you have an ETA of when my app will be re-enabled?

Thanks!
René

René,

In case you haven't been following the other thread by Tiago, you shouldn't be facing this issue any more.
