Just to give everybody a heads-up, we're performing some maintenance on the automatic reviewing process and it will be offline this week. Therefore, new application submissions will only start receiving approvals next week. Until then, they will not be available and cannot be installed.

This maintenance operation does not affect existing applications or the sandbox.

We apologize for the inconvenience!

We really need feedback.

We found a security hole in gadgets rendering that the app reviewer
should be blocking but wasn't. Right now the priority is protecting
the users, so no automated reviews. Again everyone pays for a handful
of bad apples.

Another headache is that the app reviewer takes too long to review an
app after it's approved for the first time. This is also in the scope
of this change.

We'll start sending automated e-mails about problems in the spec next
week, with instructions on how to fix your app. Basically it's the
same set of requirements we ask upon submission: that it has an
author, title, description, valid thumbnail, etc, and all resources
are reachable. I predict most devs reading this already have correct
specs, so the impact on you is likely to be small.

My target date is Monday noon BRT, if we manage to get this working
before that I'll reply on this thread. Again my apologies on the long
wait.

Regards,
Tiago.

Sorry everyone, we missed the deadline.

These are trying times, we're under heavy fire from malicious apps. More important that having the app reviewer running is making sure it will reject bad apps. You can expect the app submission process to become more rigid before the year ends.

More than that, I can only say we're focused on it. We're already dry-running the new reviewer, one that does all the work except update the directory. I sincerely believe we'll be able to run one round of real reviews tomorrow. Wish us luck. :-)

Best regards,
Tiago

Hi Fabio.

No, unfortunately we can't put it back online just yet.

Like Tiago said, we're under attack from malicious apps and protecting our platform is very important. As soon as we have a working version of the new app reviewer, we'll announce it!

Thank you for your support of the Orkut platform!

Since the app reviewer went offline, ELEX seems to be able to publish
new apps (kongfu, forest story, etc).

I would like to know if they got some kind of advantage in this period
and, if yes, why? If not, why only their apps are shown in the new
apps section?

Thank you.

Thank you Bruno and Tiago for your reply.

I apologize if I´ve been insistent when asking for feedback, but for
my back luck , the timing was bad for me , once I finished my beta one
week after the changes for the aut rev began, and since then , I´ve
been longing for having the app finally submitted.

Good luck team !

While we're waiting for the review process is completed automatically,
ELEX some applications are being approved.

Examples: kongfu, Forest Story, Guerra Tribal, Terranova, Reinos de
Dinossauros, Meu Cassino, Plantas x Espantalhos, Ilha da Fantasia,
Pandora...

I wonder why it only applications are being approved and we are here
in the forum for months and months waiting to get our applications
approved?

Thank you.

We reviewed all pending apps from yesterday. Things look good. Please let us know if your app was incorrectly rejected due to XSS or objectionable content.

Today we'll dry run a new reviewer on all apps, also the featured ones. If things look good, we'll bring it back up and start continuously reviewing apps again.

Best regards,

I hope you have success in the new apps reviewer Tiago.

Security is something really important. On orkut, one of the problems that usually happens, is cloning of apps. Most of the time, who makes the copy of the app, only catches the original XML file, and add in orkut with the some modifications. It is usually done by users without experience.

So, here are some tips to my friends developers who want to further improve their applications at security:

- Make the XML file to be create dynamically, so that only the servers at Google can access it (through the blocking of IPs in the file);
- Lock the right button of mouse in the iframe that orkut runs the app. Simply add a javascript block in the XML CDATA, that orkut will read the code, and will enable the lock on the iframe;
- If possible, spend your javascript files by some kind of encryption;

I guess so contributed. If you need, I can give some examples to help in the app security.

Best Regards,
André Teixeira - Krowten Network

The queue was emptied this morning around 5:00 GMT. Things didn't went 100% correct, as you can see in the other thread.

If you received a rejection without a reason or a rejection with a crazy reason, please resubmit.

We want a full time running app reviewer by the end of the next week, so expect one or two "extraordinary" rounds of reviews with an unproven release. The expected delivery for a high quality, professional app reviewer is before Christmas. Please keep the complaints, suggestions and feedback coming.

Sorry if I didn't make myself clear. The app reviewer is not running full time yet. Looks like we'll be able to do that today or tomorrow. If we can't make it, you can expect another manual round of reviews.

Hi Guys

I'm, Eros Carvalho, I'm producer at Techfront.

We have a game waiting to review from 2 weeks ago.

I just want know if we have a realist ETA for the app review.

I think that a lot of members of this list have clients asking about their app approval, and week by week we need send a message talking about "one more week to fix".

Can everyone send a realist schedule about this issue, we'll have this working this week?

Thanks in advance.

um mês,
muitos usuários já poderiam estar utilizando da app,
por favor postem alguma informação.

Obrigado

Thanks in advance

We're running the app reviewer right now. You should either get an e-mail with "app approved" or with a proper reason for rejection. If you get multiple e-mails for the same app, or an e-mail with missing or absurd explanation for the rejection, please let us know.

If all goes well, we'll bring it back online this week. I know this has been a pain for everyone, so thank you for the support.

@eros we should review _all_ apps on any given day, unless we stop the service because we found something wrong.

Regards,
The orkut apps team.

Hi Vinicius,

I checked your application and indeed it has been rejected.
The XML is correct, so another possibility for failure is if you are using certain trademarks in your description.
Please removing all Google brand names from your title and description and try to repost it.

Thanks for your patience!

Yes, the title of this thread is getting increasingly inaccurate :-)

We know that having the AppReviewer offline for so long is a big inconvenience for everybody, but please bear with us. We are immensely grateful for your patience and appreciate your support of the Orkut platform. Like we have said before, the reason this is taking so long is that we want to do it right. When we're back online, we will have a much better AppReviewer and the developer experience will improve for everybody.

So, just to clarify, our temporary procedure is to run a manual batch of approvals every week (usually Fridays) to take care of all the pending applications submitted during the week. So, if you submit your application, it should be approved the following Friday, if all goes well.

If you have any problems, please feel free to complain and we will try to help you in any way we can.

Thanks everyone for your continued support.
