Hello all!

Thank you to those who helped in the Open Data Prep Day! I had fun!

Now that the map is updated and the wiki is nice and clean, I recommend to you all to add your event!

There are still tasks left in the pad - so please grab one:

Some issues to flag -
1. There are some bugs that need to be fixed, some of them affect the translations. If some one can help with this crucial bug, it would be helpful - https://github.com/okfn/opendataday.org/issues/36

2. I believe it is time to change the logo of Open Data Day. The current logo is "Open Data Day Hackathon" . Any ideas?

We at OK are working on this year mini grant scheme for Open Data Day (details soon!), so  we are a bit busy. Any help from other in this wonderful community will be appreciated.

Best,

Hi Mor!
We are ready for Open Data Day in El Salvador as well!
Are we having some worshops but not a hackaton, so I guess having a logo just as ODD will be better (I am sure other countries may be agree).
When do you think could we have the logo? So we can use it.
We will add our event at the map this week! :)
My best!

A logo would be excellent !!!! Es un emblema que todos usaríamos para darle "identidad gráfica única" a la diversidad de actividades de cada quien. In Torreón (Mex) we are finishing to design a 2 day agenda (4th & 5th), so as to have a regional (State of Coahuila) gathering of public servants, civil society orgs. and regional universities. No conditions for hackaton. Lots of conditions to promote Open Data - conferences & workshops. (Abrazos Iris!)

Dear All,

I am Yousra Bakr from Egypt. I mange a research grant on the Data Revolution at the Access to Knowledge for Development Center (A2K4D) at the School of Business of the American University in Cairo.

We too are ready for the Open Data Day! We are very excited to take part in this great initiative and we are currently preparing a proposal with our plan for the day which will probably include an ideathon for data-driven apps and a panel discussion. We also have partners in Palestine and Morocco who are preparing something as well :)

Will keep you updated and once we finalize our agendas, we will add them to the Open Data Day Map!

Have a great day!

Yousra

Hello everyone,

Nika and Raimonds from Latvia here. We are also organizing hackathon on March 5 for local journalists and open data geeks here in Riga. Where can we find instructions to add our event to the map?

Looking forward,
Nika

Hi, Iris and everyone!

Last year, Open Knowledge Japan made Open Data Day Logo Generator.
Each logo of the city has a different styles made from city's name,
lat and lng. It was made by Yuichi Yazaki.

Enjoy!

I agree with others that simplifying the logo would be a good idea. Currently it is "Open Data Day Hackathon". I would be happy if it was shortened to "Open Data Day" and even happier if it was just "Open Data". This would provide a clean canvas for everyone to paint what they want or need -- whether that is workshops, information sessions, hackathons, code-a-ramas, or something else that promotes or celebrates open data.

... gerry

Many links on the opendataday.org main page are still pointing to 2015 (e.g. the "Where is it?" section).
Here's a PR to fix it:
https://github.com/okfn/opendataday.org/pull/68

Cheers,
Augusto

if i'm not mistaken, keeping the links pointed to 2015 was done on purpose....i'm pretty sure that was the plan from the hangout when we met and did some of these tasks together.
i could be wrong (i am a lot ;) ), so deferring to @mor for clarification here...

Really?? What possible reason could you have for that? The website explicitly tells visitors to see the wiki:

"Where is it?
Check the wiki to see where an open data hackathon may be happening near you - if there isn't one, host one!"

When people try to find one to participate now, they do not find the events that are actually happening because the links point to 2015. This will most certainly decrease participation on local events if left unchanged.

Regards,
Augusto

Our event is still not showing on the map--DeKalb, IL.  We are looking to connect via Google Hangouts with anyone that day.  We are at Northern Illinois University.  Message me if interested in connecting.  We have high school to adults from the community attending and Christopher Whitaker with Code for America will be our guest presenter at 10:30 AM CST Chicago time!

i'm not sure, but i think your lat and long are bad referenced, can you check?

http://www.latlong.net/

because the actual point reference to the middle of the ocean
lat: 41.560402 long: 88.460222

salud!

Longitudes in the western hemisphere are negative.

I modified the sheet to the coordinates of your event (at the Founders Memorial Library) to this:
lat: 41.9339599 lon: -88.7664202

Zooming in all the way, it appears correct now on the map.

Thank you!

NIU Tech Bark student team is setting up a SLACK channel for anyone who wants to communicate and potentially collaborate with us on March 5th.  Attached is our agenda for the day.  We will be live March 5th from 10 AM to 6PM CST.
The slack channel name is CodeAcross2016 as the events are called Code Across in many US cities.  We would love to interact.  Mostly new people to coding and hacking, so simple community problems would be great.

Also, does anyone have a list of good open data sources to post for people.

Thanks!

Tracy,

Nice! Can I ask that you hook up http://slackinvite.me/ with http://codeacross2016.slack.com and turn-on auto-invite?

If you set that up, you can then just direct people to http://slackinvite.me/to/codeacross2016/ and participants can join without having to be invited manually by you (or other admins).

Otherwise you'll be spending your time during the day sending out invites.
