Yeah, I know that there's been things in the past. But I also know
that there's been lots of changes in the last 12 months, particularly
with the likes of Netbeans.

So basically I'm not after links, I'm after current points of view
from this (NZ) community.

This isn't an attempt to start a flame war.

We've recently taken on a new staff member who just switched from
Komodo Edit to Netbeans, while the rest of us are on Eclipse. This
has sparked some discussion within the office and we want to review
whether or not we're using the IDE which would suit us best.

Although the threads are old, in my case, my preferences have not changed
one bit.

PHPEd is still king. Zend Studio is very powerfull, but the Eclipse system
is such a management nightmare that I still write it off. I've acutually
come to hate it (Eclipse) as bloatware.

Eclipse PDT

Mostly because I've been using Eclipse forever and for everything.
Specific features I like (on top of my head):

- Code completion
- Syntax error checking
- Regex search and replace
- Lots of plugins available
- I can use it for developing in other programming languages like
Java, Google Android, etc
- Multi platforms
- It's FREE :-)

I keep hearing cool things about Eclipse, trying it for a few hours,
and giving up again. So many little things just get in the way. Then a
few months later someone I respect will say it's great, and I'll come
back for another slap in the face.

IDEs seem to be just a bit too much for me. I cope fine with $EDITOR
and a few xterms, and I don't have to dig through a mighty GUI to find
that my indent preference is almost available. (Also, $EDITOR's config
GUI sucks horribly.)

The hype whispers keep telling me I'm missing out on Something Good,
but I don't know quite what.

Jochen, has there yet been an editor / IDE showdown at the AK meetups?

Being nearly mac-exclusive, I do most of my coding in TextMate, and any text manip in TextWrangler (it has superb grep/regex capabilities)

I don't use an IDE, but if I was to use one, it'd be something like Coda or Espresso.

If I wanted to use a cross-platform, free IDE that isn't half bad, but is based on Eclipse, I'd use Aptana for HTML+CSS+JS+PHP support. It's nice because it has built in support for Firefox and Safari, (and IE when you're on Windows)

PHPEd looks great but no support for Mac or linux. I use Netbeans IDE at the moment and used to use Aptana.

Netbeans reasoning:
 - Free
 - multiple FTP for each project.
 - subversion
 - Really easy to setup PHP debugging (Xdebug).
 - runs well on ubuntu as well as OSX for home/work.
 - python support.
 - ability to create custom code templates.

On Linux I use Netbeans. In my opinion is a great IDE.
On Windows, I'm using Zend Developer yet.

I used VS.php which is a Visual Studio .net 2008 addition (like PDT for
Eclipse) but had some problems with good debugging and some other features
so I shifted to Eclipse PDT (free) and have recently been using ZEND Studio
for Eclipse because of the Firefox toolbar (not free but can use as trial
for a while). I find the PDT features better except I don't have Zend Studio
toolbar working with it and haven't tried to get it going.

I have tried some other tools (none of which are free) like CodeCharge
Studio 4 and CodeGear (delphi's PHP IDE) but wasn't that fussed. Issue for
me is learning time and the flexibility to do what I want it to which in
both cases produced problems for me. I didn't want to become a specialist of
either to use them. I might find CodeGear easier now I have more experience
but am happy with what I am using so I wouldn't pay for it unless I had to
for based on a client requirement.

I haven't tried some of those suggested in other posts but have been quite
happy with Eclipse in either flavour.
Notepad++ is handy for quick editing of files without having to setup
projects etc but I wouldn't use it for a project.

Emacs. Because I can do any editing with it, including composing
emails, read files through ssh/ftp, and is still unsurpassed with
features like electric indent.

And it works on every platform, so I don't have to learn a new editor
when I switch platforms.

Eclipse + PHPEclipse + DBG Debugging support + DPT + Javascript dev tools + Web Developer Tools + viPlugin.

Why:  I've been using eclipse for +4 years now and it works well for me, it allows me to use the same environment for all the languages I code in (dependent on the plugins of course...) and it's cross platform (I can make it work on Windows, Linux and the Mac.

Caveat:  There was a comment about it being bloatware - that's not unjustified - it will eat as much memory as you through at it.  I've seen an image describing it as "Eclipse OS 3" - given some of the plugins, I can see that becoming very true ... 
I'm also used to zipping the Eclipse folder prior to running updates, in case something goes horribly wrong.

I like Netbeans for PHP on Ubuntu because it is free and it has the
few features that I like about IDE's: Highlighting, bracket completion
(albeit somewhat [non/over]intuitive), error detection, code explorer
(functions, variables, classes and methods are listed in a tree view).

On Windows I like PSPad because that's what I grew up on. The best
feature of PSPad is being able to browse a remote server via FTP and
edit files without transferring them by hand.

I actually use both for their strengths, with PSPad on XP in a Virtual
Box. One thing that annoys me with NetBeans is the suggestive prompts
- I already know what I want to type, I don't need that stupid
computer to get in the way and force me to press escape to continue!
But ah well, pro's outweigh the con's I guess :D

Turn the auto prompts off in the options mate. Then you can use control + space to bring them up on a case by case basis. Works a treat.
