NHS Hack Day Manchester??? sept/oct 2015

Hello NWRUGers

I'm just sounding out for advice really about the prospect of running NHS Hack Day in Manchester in September/October this year?

NHS Hack Day is a national, 'unofficial' NHS movement where clinical medical staff and developers work together over the weekend to solve problems of all kinds in health and social care. Everyone is a volunteer. www.nhshackday.org

The kind of things I'd like advice on are:

1) what sort of venues would be suitable in the Central Manchester Area? (numbers are usually 150-250 people, we need indestructible WiFi, shelter from the elements and can work around most else) We thought about possibly MOSI, or asking one of the local hospital trusts to help by loaning us their conferencing facilities - apparently the Christie has good facilities in this regard.

2) any tips on engaging the local dev community outside of NWRUG?

I would probably be interested in attending something like that... the venue's going to prove a problem/costly though. Capacity is much smaller but maybe madlab or spaceballs would give you some space to run it?

I could give a lot of advice here, but my knowledge is now date. It's best you make contact with people who have attempted to do this stuff before and more recently than most. Ian Forrester (@cubicgarden) and Gemma Cameron (@rubygem) are both worth speaking to.

Sounds like a great idea to have a themed hackday.

Really active Health community with http://www.meetup.com/Health-2-0-Manchester/
Recently they've been running Service Design workshops that would be a really good precursor to any future hackday.
I'm sure Vim (spaceport) and the Service Design team could be persuaded to get involved.
Perhaps the MSP Greenheys space that they run the workshops in could be utilised. Idalia Dawidowska, the organiser is really approachable.

I was talking to a local gov't backed organisation last week who are looking to finance 5k health projects, through a scheme they're trying to finalise. So perhaps that could be incorporated into a hackday i.e. continuation of the projects, rather than all the 'hacks' dieing off.

Madlab has just been refurbished so that could be a good small venue if you think more 50-100 is likely.

NHS Choices in Leeds are often at NWRUG so perhaps they'd have motivation to get involved also.

I have a good overview of venues as I run an annual conference. Are you planning to hold it on the weekend? If so Universities have good space.

Of the top of my head

• Spaceport - 100 peeps, could get it for free if you ask nicely
• MOSI (as you mentioned) will cost £££ so you will need to charge or get some sponsors
• The Sharp Project - weekend only, in east manchester, good wifi

I would rule out places like the town hall, hotels (midlands, hilton etc) unless you can negotiate them down. Also Wifi may be a problem at some venues (MOSI) so you will need to hire it in.

I would second Paul's recommendation to speak to Gemma as she can give you a good overview of running a big hack event (Hack Manchester) and as Ian mentions, definitely talk to Idalia. 

In terms of engaging communities. Just do what you are doing here. Find out who the organisers are and start talking to them. Ask if you can post on their meetup/google groups pages etc and attend events in person. 

Also talk to the other NHS Hack organisers and ask them how they got started

SpacePort are nice people and the location is good (I use them for Manchester Go meetups when we have meetings), but careful of heat. The space becomes hot, and with >100 people you might need to talk to them about adequate cooling.

Regarding wider community, I go to the Manchester R meetups fairly regularly and they are generally attended by those, if not from Health or Academia, then certainly with people with a thirst for good datasets.  http://www.rmanchester.org/ The mailing list is closed off, but i'm sure if you mail them they can help get the word out.  Note the change of venue for the next meetup: http://www.meetup.com/Manchester-R/events/222481586/
