dear all,
i still don't know how to deal with inclusion and language. here i'll
try to include both nsnd english speakers and people speaking maternji
eksperiment.

we, nsnd network, were officially approached by wikimedia people. they
want to support our activity. when i say "we" i also think of several
people from wikimedia who in this case sit on two chairs. i appreciate
that :)

getting into more official collaboration means we will change some of
the constituent dynamics in this group. that usually doesn't work with
hackers. still, i'm optimistic. the results of that step will be
tangible things or something which we already welcomed before:
financial support for traveling costs, food or subsidy for
accommodation. and it didn't really hurt us.

that support came from multimedia institute which in many ways
legitimated itself in providing support for skill sharing in zagreb
and hacklab in mama. there are other organizations which are in a
loose or stronger relations with local communities. there are also
other communities which would like to strengthen their
existence.through gathering together and form some sort of
organization wich will serve the need for sustainability.

please, let me map the (informal) organizations + projects we have at
nsnd. i'm sure i'll forget someone. i'm sorry in advance. i propose to
start this discussion with mapping initiatives and then getting into
more exploration of desires, needs, visions etc. i can't do this but
express what i know. very biased. as always we here we
have:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/There_are_known_knowns

- - - - ORGS - - - -
CROATIA:
* zagreb - skill sharing - informal community which founded hacklab u
mami, invited others to nsnd and being quite sustainable for years.
institutional structure is complex but it can be simplified to:
community which is represented by multimedia institute when it comes
to bureaucratic procedures. multimedia institute encourages members of
community to become members of the organization but tries not to
enforce anything which will ruin the informality of the community. i'm
sitting on two chairs. or wearing two hats. as they say.
* split - sok - organization registered in split, our partner for
organization of split nsnd for years. being in small city it rather
struggles with sustainability. mostly because a lot of potential
active members are based or work and live halftime in zagreb. members
from split are some of the most active members of zagreb skill sharing
community.
* moravice - forum mladih moravice - our oldest stable partner for
organization of always fantastic nsnd in moravice. being in rather
small city it is miracle how much mans, milan &co. did (hacklab, nsnd,
workshops with young people). still, if there is no mans and/or milan
the whole project can easily disappear.
* osijek - informal organization with some recent momentum. getting
into the new space (still, not their own) recently. a lot of
enthusiasm. the proof that having a energizing person, working for
years, like valent could bring some results :)
* varaždin & čakovec - foi (faculty) & act (ngo) - not much hanging
out on nsnds but organize skill sharing and/or festivals gathering a
lot of people form nsnd group.

MACEDONIA:
* skopje - spodeli* line of projects, hacklab, self-sustainable,
inspiring, f*great community. organizing nsnd in ohrid. very founders
of the nsnd.

SERBIA:
* beograd - linux user group, skill sharing, recently full steam ahead
hacklab. a community with most diverse wings in many
organizations/projects around/aside. probably the biggest opportunity
to grow in the biggest city in the region. our partner in organization
of april nsnds in belgrade. a great opportunity to be a hub in/with
our nsnd hub.

KOSOVO:
* pristina - linux user group, hacklab, interested in organizing one
more nsnd during the year. the youngest group of enthusiasts. just
like valent it so great to have people like james.

GERMANY:
* ccc - well, ccc.

- - - - PROJECTS - - - -
* nsnd - well, nsnd.
* hacklab couch suring - the project where we would like to make
support for mobility of hackers on all of these places i mentioned.
it's great to give opportunity so hackers can go and enjoy the ambient
of the other hacklabs on mutual benefits of individuals and
communities.
* saturday hangouts - we tried. in zagreb. in between hacklabs. we
struggle. still, one word: kazimir is fucking hero.

ok. here it is. please let's see what we would like to see here. what
are the needs. proposals. fears.

i za kraj, malo maternjeg. mali podsjetnik da je bolje čuti se
međusobno nego odustati jer nas živcira jebeni engleski.

Marcell, thanks for finally putting this together on the list. :)

I say we go with the hacklab couch surfing thing first and see how it
goes. What exactly is necessary for all legal entities, (Free Software
Macedonia, the Multimedia Institute, Wikimedia Serbia and FLOSSK
probably?) to do in order to get these funds cleared for anyone that
would like to use the funds to travel to any of the hacklab in the
region? If we need to sign some mutual document, let's do that first.
I'm available to coordinate stuff from our side. Let's put the
bureaucracy part down first if that's an obstacle. who would like to
do it on part of their own organization. maybe we can coordinate this
on the side and let the people here know when it's done.

how about a hangout or BBB next Saturday? I'm also always on IRC so
ping me and we can arrange smth.

in the meantime, here is something that everyone can do..
http://wiki.nsnd.org/index.php?title=Main_Page

add yourself to the list if you're able to offer a bed or two at your
place, or are just able to show people around in your city while
they're there. The final solution is to rent a bed in a hostel because
that is one of the things that can be covered as far as I understood.

Hi Marcel,
I can tell you this. In kosovo we are missing tech experts on the
ground. All the information in the world is available to you on the
internet, but the young kids in kosovo are not able to access this
infomation. Also, it is not that we have not tried to get older people
in kosovo, but they are all busy surviving, most of the older people
in kosovo have severe pressure to earn money and dont have the luxury
of spending time on anything else. So, I would like to invite all the
geeks with skilllz to just come to prishtina for a coulple of days or
longer, we will organizing some infomal tech camps and you can try and
help give the people there some inspiration to learn to interact over
the internet.

specifically we are looking for people who can help with :
1. voip
2. linux
3. bugzilla and bug trackers, workflow etc/
4. php
5. git and svn etc
6. ssh
7. even basics like irc, most dont know how to use it.

Hi all,

I think it would be great if we can set-up a common planet so we can
read the blogs of our broader community. I believe we can raise the
level of communication and knowledge-sharing in this manner. It is not
much, but at least we can get-to-know one another better, see what
interest the other communities have etc.

dear all,

<snip>

Hail to all hackers ;)

Hack couch surfing is an awesome project and would definitely bring together our widely distributed community and probably something will come out of that...

Now for some practical things... I'm couchsufer for few years now, and we have hosted many people in our flat, we have gone to others as guests but only few times. Couchsurfing is not as simple as it seams. You need to have a good reputation and good profile page because strangers won't let you in their flat if you have an empty profile page and no positive feedback, best way to get positive feedback is for you to host somebody.

We have a much smaller community so we can find out if anybody who is guest or host is a psycho ;)

But still there are different preferences and requirements that both hosts and guests have.

For example: smokers and non-smokers, issues of smoking inside, pets, sleeping conditions, food preferences, etc...

If you are a host who has pets, doesn't smoke and is a vegetarian (like me) you can host anybody if they aren't alegric to cats, don't mind smoking outside and don't bring any meat products in our flat.

This is just one simple example, there are much more complicated ones, I have heard of much weirder ones, but that is a subject for another email.

I suggest that we create a WIKI template that must be filled out by anybody who is a host or would like to be a guest.

How will the money be divided? Is money spend for hosting or for being a guest? Or for both? Can some smaller hackerspace like ones in Osijek and Skopje get money so that we can call some guests or do only people from other hackerspaces get money and they choose where they would like to go?

This could be great opportunity for small and new hackerspaces to get great people in their space and do some skill sharing...

Cheers,
Valent.

Hi Mike,
I can certainly sympathize with situation in Kosovo and need for tech knowledge, but I'm not sure this group of people can provide what you need. Certainly there are bunch of knowleable people here that have really high level of different skills but they aren't teachers and don't know and maybe even don't wish to teach beginners. There are probably ones that wish and would like to do this, but don't expect that from everybody. There are lots of great hackers but they couldn't teach if their life depended on it...

What kind of broadband connections do you have in Kosovo? From quick search I can see that broadband is readily  awailable so my suggestion is to focus people on self-teaching via online free courses, that is much better that 1-2 day course that people visiting you could do for you.

Do you know of online programming courses? I can share some of my links.

If you would host us we can do basic networking and wireless 2 day course and show you how you can deploy your own wifi mesh network in any place of Kosovo...

Cheers,
Valent.

Valent, if you want to come for a visit it would be great. we might be
able to find money for your expenses.
the thing is that we need people to show up to wake these people from
from the dreamland for a day.
most of the time they are just on facebook and not doing anything. I
hope when we have money for a hacklab it might make things better.

We have talked about this on our regular monthly hacklab meeting two
days ago in Skopje. We were very much interested about hacker
couchsurfing as initiation of this broader cooperation.

We can host guests in 2012 starting from November and so far have two
places (I'll add mine later) where someone can sleep. We would also
like to send someone to the other hacklabs. We were thinking of having
some loose form of nomination process within our community and keep
the pilot trial as simple as possible.

What we weren't sure about were the number of days/weeks of a single
hacklab surfing (or a rough estimate).

Free Software Macedonia will stand behind this as a formal entity in
Skopje.

What we expect is that cooperation on actual projects might emerge
from this practice of 'getting to know each other'. My personal
preference would be that quickly enough... this hacklab couch surfing
will be used to bring someone in Skopje who might help
kickstart/contribute a new project here... and we send someone to
kickstart/contribute something in Zagreb... and so on...
