NHSearch is (one of the) projects that is dependent upon Lucene.NET so
I figured that I would share this email thread from the ASF (Apache
Software Foundation) in case there are participants on this list that
are interested in getting involved, etc. to participate in
Lucene.NET's future viability, etc.

http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/lucene-lucene-net-user/201010.mbox/%3C083FF0A3-CE11-4EE...@apache.org%3E

Lucene.NET has some great functionality; it would be a shame to see it
die from lack of involvement/support/contribution so if anyone has
some spare cycles to apply to the project, has always wanted to get
involved in an OSS project, etc. now might be a great time to start!

Thanks, Steve.

I recently committed to using NHSearch on a project, and don't want to see it sink, since there aren't great alternatives.

Heading over to the Lucene.Net dev list...

>>since there aren't great alternatives.

That's a really salient point -- there really *isn't* another OSS
entry in the .NET free-text search space that one could just switch
over to even *if* you wanted to make the change to it instead of
remaining with Lucene.NET. In the .NET OSS space, Lucene.NET is sort
of one-of-a-kind (at least AFAIK -- perhaps there is something else
out there and I'm simply not aware of it, of course).

I'm sad to have to say that we have to do this (see link) kind of things.

I don't like this either, but I copied, too. I hope the future will be save. If not I'll be able to get it running as a forked OSS project on my servers. I'm hoping that the discussions on Lucence.NET forum will be over asap.

In our case it is hosted in a public OSS repository under Mercurial.

I know what you mean. In moment I'm porting the very last version of the java source and after that it'll be public.

IMO you should make it public ASAP (before start the work on it)

Ah...
To convert it try the VS2005 converter from JAVA to C#.

NGit has gone the continuous migration path and uses Sharpen to transform
Java to C#:

http://developer.db4o.com/Blogs/Projects/tabid/168/entryid/965/Default.aspx

Something like that looks much more promising to create a sustainable
project that can keep up with the original. But then I haven't used sharpen
or lucene, so caveat emptor.

Best Regards, David

I know sharpen and I'm testing it with lucence. I hope it'll be possible to create a continues migration. I hope I can say something asap.

To be honest, I don't think that the development will benefit from trying to stay up to date with the Java version, in an automated way. Maybe as a separate "reference" branch or for specific sub projects, but other than that I think it will be easier to get a committed user and developer base if we can stay true to the .NET idioms.

Not only! First of all there have to be a base to get it done. The current Lucence.NET code base is IMHO to old and I would like to start with the current version 3.x. After a completed migration, it's possible to get optimization and implementation.

If there is (real) interest in doing anything about the state of Lucene.NET, I would really recommend beginning a conversation about your ideas with the ASF.

This discussion here about different ways to 'rejuvinate' the Lucene.NET proeject's codebase, while useful (if it eventually leads to actual action on someone's part), sadly won't help that project remain viable in the eyes of the ASF.  If there's impetus to act, then I would recommend reaching out to the ASF about all of your ideas, committments, etc. to begin a conversation with them about the project's viability ASAP (unless its already too late in their eyes since that thread I listed in the initial post to this thread seems to (still) have no response since OCT 2010 as far as I can tell).

There are (at least) two issues we are conflating here:
1. What is the future of Lucene.NET (which we cannot entirely answer in this forum)
2. What can NHSEARCH do to mitigate its dependency on another OSS project with an unclear future?

The 'private fork' Fabio has created seems to have addressed #2 (for the time being at least) but #1 can't be addressed/resolved here and efforts to do so need to be directed to the ASF and the 'official' Lucene.NET project team before its too late to 'save' Lucene.NET from becoming abandon-ware.

Good points, but a lot (relatively) has happened since oct 2010. All in all, the future looks rather promising for Lucene.Net.

That's great news; thanks for the update(s).  Personally, I'd hate to see Lucene.NET whither on the vine and die -- it solves a problem in the .NET space not really well-addressed by anything else right now.

Lucene.net is now being championed by StackOverflow:

waiting release of binaries... in the mean time
with some minor fix and VS2010.
