Excuse my laziness if this has been reported before, but I haven't checked through all the recent mail here.

I just wanted to report that the previously painful performance on the stock Vibrant becomes positively lightening speed after a Market-available lag fix app is applied.

Unfortunately, this required rooting, but at least it demonstrates that the problem is in the device's standard cache management and not in the Newsrob code.

Hey Phil,

yeah, thanks for mentioning it. Could you please link to the app?

Cheers,
Mariano

I'm pretty sure he's talking about this: http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.rc.QuickFixLagFix

I haven't used it, but reports from those that have are good. I wrote my own stuff I like better, but there are pros and cons to both ways. There is supposed to be a new kernel build out soon with an even better solution, but they are still working the bugs out.

A new kernel build means a custom kernel by the developer community or by Samsung?

The developer community. It's posted on XDA, but seems to have issues. I don't recommend people try it yet, there are still some bugs to work out.

Samsung is still showing no interest in producing a worthwhile update. :(

Samsung is doing it in private, and they've already committed to froyo in the fairly near future. With any luck, they'll fix rfs.

Hey, Mariano.

Travis posted the correct link to the lag fix I used. It is a
developer community product.

Samsung is working on a maintenance release which is focused on their
GPS issue, but I suspect it will embrace some of the issues that the
lag fix addressed as well.

Apparently, an unofficial version of their work has been leaked into
the wild and it does contain more than just GPS mods. Reactions have
so far been positive, from what I have read.

After more than a week of using Newsrob with the lag fix applied, I am
still very positive about performance, and I'm not seeing any other
problems.

Thanks for your detailed response. Good news.

So you haven't heard if the unofficial version of their work includes lag countermeasures?
