REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION: SOC.HISTORY.MODERATED

Title: soc.history.moderated

This will be a moderated group.

Moderators: Volunteers are very much still encouraged. Preliminary names include
the following:

Todd McComb
Richard Miller
Laura Mollett (Art History)
Jason Esser (BA History Univ. Minnesota)
myself (Mike Traynor)

More help would be appreciated.

Charter: The group will allow a free-flowing discussion of historical events
and trends of _general_ intrest to the Usenet history devotees. If desired
later, this group will allow for subgroup formation into seperate historical
periods and topics.

The moderator will have broad powers to determine what topics are of general
interest. A non-exclusive list of post characteristics the moderator can
use to determine the acceptance or rejection of a post for general posting
in the group are:

o ad-hominem attacks
o flames
o pathological cross-postings for a given posts
(for example, cross-postings to/from groups that
bear little relation to the nature of the post)
o use of inappropriate vulgarisms in a post
o general tastlessness in a post

o historical topics of questionable validity
o rejections of well-established historical events
using references of dubious validity

(These last two are to be used only when overwhelming
evidence confirms either the dubious nature of the
"history" in the post or the dubious nature of the
sources countering well-established history. In
either case, the moderator evaluating the post would
be advised to consult an historian with accreditations
if she or he is unsure.)

If the moderator so desires, she/he will respond to a rejected post stating
the reasons for rejection, and if she/he so desires, suggesting modifications
that will allow a modified post into the group.

Lively, animated discussions on historical events or topics where there is
genuine controversy, or where there is general consensus, are encouraged.
Requests for information are also encouraged.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
END OF CHARTER

Bluntly, I have very little experience in this, so any constructive suggestions
or helpful comments on this proto-charter are encouraged. Volunteers for
moderation are also encouraged.

-Mike Traynor

HOW TO VOTE

Send MAIL to: jmay...@oac.hsc.uth.tmc.edu
Just Replying should work if you are not reading this on a mailing list.
Please do not post your vote, as it won't count and may well earn you flames
from the peanut gallery.

Your mail message should contain one of the following statements:
I vote YES on soc.history.moderated
I vote NO on soc.history.moderated

You may also ABSTAIN in place of YES/NO - this will not affect the outcome.
Anything else may be rejected by the automatic vote counting program. Please
don't include a copy of this entire message; it just wastes disk space. The
votetaker will respond to your received ballots with a personal acknowledge-
ment by mail - if you do not receive one within several days, try again. It's
your responsibility to make sure your vote is registered correctly.

Only one vote per person and per account will be counted. Addresses and
votes of all voters will be published in the final voting results list.
