REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)
unmoderated group rec.audio.tubes

Summary: Discussion of electronic audio circuits which use vacuum tubes
Proposed by: Reid Kneeland (re...@tti.com)

RATIONALE

Although the transistor and its relatives have largely replaced vacuum
tubes in modern electronic products, there remains a substantial set of
people who, for various reasons, prefer tube (or "valve") equipment,
and there remain many companies which produce such products. There are
also a great many "vintage" audio products of various types which often
need to be modified, repaired or restored. There are a number of
special issues associated with tube electronics that are not of concern
to most users of audio equipment, and there is currently no one place
for discussion of these topics on the Net.

Discussion of this topic is terribly scattered throughout the Net,
depending on the application, and is frequently of interest only to a
very small segment of a given group's readership. Sci.electronics is
populated mostly by professional EEs, very few of whom care much about
tubes and many of whom are often downright hostile to non-EEs posting
with tube-related questions. Rec.audio.tech covers too much territory,
and has of late fallen into flame wars - it also tends to ignore guitar
amplifiers, one of the largest market segments for tube equipment.
Rec.audio.high-end, rec.music.makers.guitar and rec.antiques.radio+phono
all include some discussion of the subject, but are also very specialized
in their applications.

CHARTER

Rec.audio.tubes is dedicated to the discussion of vacuum tube
audio equipment, including the following topics:

* hi-fi applications
* guitar (and other instrument) amplifiers
* radio circuits
* theory and design
* vintage and modern equipment
* repair/modification/restoration
* purchase recommendations.

Participants from all backgrounds are welcome.

DISCUSSION

Interested parties are encouraged to discuss this proposal:
PLEASE post your comments ONLY to NEWS.GROUPS.

This is *NOT* a Call For Votes (CFV)! The Call For Votes will be
posted approximately 21 to 30 days from now. An independent third
party will run the vote, and instructions will be supplied at that time.

This RFD has been posted to the following newsgroups:

news.announce.newgroups, news.groups, rec.audio.tech,
rec.music.makers.bass, rec.music.makers.guitar,
rec.antiques.radio+phono, rec.radio.amateur.equipment,
sci.electronics, alt.guitar.amps

and to The Bottom Line (bass players' mailing list)

Please forward this to anyone you think may be interested. Thank you.
