Running FF 2.0.0.20 under Win98SE. For some time, FF has been
exhibiting issues: "FF has performed an illegal instruction and will
now close" or similar. Removing FF (using Control panel -> Add/Remove
Program) and reinstalling hasn't fixed this at all.

So between removing and reinstalling I ran a registry cleaner to
remove the residue of FF. Real bad idea, it seems - although
something "extra" was needed beyond just remove/reinstall.

Now if I click on a link in an email message, FF opens a new blank
page. So something got broken, but I have no idea what.

Posted a question to the FF support forum a couple of weeks back, but
no answers - they are probably still ROFL-ing at anyone still using
Win98SE.

Any suggestions what might be broken and how to reinstate it would be
welcome.

(Possibly either a buggy plug-in or a corrupted cache.)

It is likely that the registry association for HTTP: links has been mangled.

1. From Windows Explorer, go to "Tools » Folder Options » File Types"
2. In the "Registered File Types" list, select the entry
Extensions: (none)
File Types: URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol
3. Click the "Advanced" button
4. In the "Actions" list, select "open"
5. Click "Edit"
6. Make the following settings

(a) In the box "Application used to perform action", enter the
following with all of the quote marks shown

"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -url "%1"

Use the correct path to firefox.exe on your computer.

(b) Put a check-mark in "Use DDE".

(c) Under it, set the box "DDE message" to the following

"%1",,0,0,,,,

(d) Under it, set the "Application" box to

Firefox

(e) Under it, empty the "DDE Application not running" box

(f) Under it, set the 'Topic' box to

WWW_OpenURL

7. You may need to repeat (6) with the entry
Extensions: (none)
File Types: URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Security

Try unsetting, then resetting, FireFox as default browser. If that fails to
fix it, look in Regedit to see if the string "URL Protocol" appears in a few
places, usually associated with a classid (long bracketed string of
hexadecimal digits with a few dashes in it). If you see nothing to match that
simple description before the search reports no further matches for "URL
Protocol" it means you might need some more detailed fix. Reinstalling may be
easier for you than finding it, if there is no direct way to undo the
registry cleaner's action.

View -> Folder Options -> File Types actually ...

OK so far. It currently says "Opens with: FIREFOX"

>3. Click the "Advanced" button

Don't have one. Only New Type, Remove, and Edit.

Our trajectories converge.

It currently had:

C:\PROGRA~1\MOZILL~1\FIREFOX.EXE -requestPending -osint -url "%1"

which looks weird, even to me. Corrected.

Those were the current settings.

Ralph, we are making *some* progress.

Now if I click on a URL in an email msg, the target URL opens in a new
tab in FF2. If FF is not already open, it opens to the URL. All good.

But if I click on a URL in a messge in my usenet client, it still
opens a blank page (if FF not running) OR spawns a new instance with a
blank page if it was running. Are there other activations that also
need editing?

That also looks OK to me, provided that
• PROGRA~1 is the MS-DOS 8.3 name for the "Program Files" folder (which it usually is)
• MOZILL~1 is the MS-DOS 8.3 name for the "Mozilla Firefox" folder

That is a setting in your Usenet client, Forte Free Agent 1.93/32.576

1. In Agent, go to "Options >> General Preferences >> URL Types

2. In the URL: drop-down list, select

http: URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol

3. With http: still selected, make the following settings

(a) CHECKED -- Enable highlighting and launching

(b) NOT CHECKED -- Remove URL prefix when launching

(c) SELECTED -- Use Windows registry settings

4. In the URL: drop-down list, select

https: URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Security

5. With https: still selected, make the following settings

(a) CHECKED -- Enable highlighting and launching

(b) CHECKED -- Share settings with the http protocol
