This isn't really a bug, but an undocumented feature.

In 4.1bsd, if you create a file named .hushlogin in a user's home
directory, that user won't see the message of the day (/etc/motd).
If your motd is long, or even if it isn't, you may want to create
such a file in uucp's home directory. This will save a bit of
time, both cpu and connect. It will also save you some embarassment
if you happen to put the phrase "Shere" in your /etc/motd.

We have a locally written version of .hushlogin called .supressmotd which
works as follows:
If the write date of the message of the day is older than your previous
login, you see instead the contents of the file ~/.supressmotd (mine
contains the line "No new message of the day!"
If the write date says it's new, you see motd.
Thus, if you log in frequently, you avoid most of the redundant chatter.
If you want to find out how this was done, try "sdcrdcf!glenn"

look in login(1) for a description of .hushlogin

Re: Versions of .hushlogin...

We did something similar to that here. A person can have a .motd file
which can contain one of "never", "always", "new", or "daily". Pretty
much self explainitory, but they are very usefull.

This is not an undocumented feature. I learned about it from
some documentation (probably the csh introduction) that I read
a long time ago. Now I can't remember where I read about it.

IT is in 4.2BSD as well.
