Question on darkened ZM1005 tubes

A question for the nixie experts on the list...I picked up a number of used ZM1005s that were previously in a device. Although the digits light up fine, the front of the tube on many of them is darkened. Is there anything I can do to try to remove whatever that accumulation is or is this just a sign that the tubes are heavily used and it's something I have to live with. Thanks.
