Compaq CQ 62 Audio/Sound Driver Issues on Linux

Attempted to install Ubuntu Ultimate 2.5 (Ubuntu 9.10) on Compaq CQ 61. Everything went dandy except for the absence of sound. Seems a lot of Linux distros don't pack the (probably proprietary ) audio/sound drivers.
Had this issue with a Compaq CQ 61 laptop bought from Bestell previously. Installing Mandriva 2009.1 on it seemed to sort out the issue. Mandriva it appears packs these CQ 6x sound drivers.
Will attempt to install Mandriva on the said CQ 62 lappie soon as I get my hands on an install disc.
Will keep you posted if this sorts out the issue.
