Hi Andrey:

That is great news indeed. One quick question, does it have Rapid Task Entry that can be brought up using a shortcut?  That's one of the features I use the most these days.

Thanks,
Eddie

Great work! Looks nice although (indeed) a little rough here and there on a few visual edges. Especially popping up the filter pane looks a bit old fashioned compared to the remainder of the product.

I have two questions that I couldn't find an answer to in this group:
1) I cannot find a button to disable auto-updating in the To do view
2) What do the toggles for sync with first tab do?

Best regards,
Paul

Good question on the auto-updating of the todo views. Not sure on that. The sync selection and sync zoom keep the 1st tab and that tab in sync. So, if you have tab 1 as "all tasks" and tab 2 "todo list" you can double click to see the task (goes back and forth). But if you have a tab set to, say, some temporary use, you might not want your selected task to change while you are using that view, so it would not be synced.  Or, you may sync a set of tabs to zoom into work tasks. Other tabs can show the whole tree.

Dear Andrey,

nice update, thanks! I like the Workspace Tabs. Is it possible to permanently link a Workspace Tab with a special view by locking? Otherwise, I quite often lose my view and have to reasign the view to the workspace tab.

Best wishes
Johannes

Hi Johannes,

This is why I am here listening :)

How do you lose the view in the workspace, with what action?  How do you see it could be locked?

Andrey.

Hello Andrey,

I use several workspace tabs. It would be great to have an option to permanently link a view, lets say "aims for this year" with the workspace "aims for this year". When I am working within that workspace and then want to chose another view, I sometimes forget to change the workspace and direktly click on another view, lets say "completed recently" on the left hand, while still beeing in the workspace "aims for this year". Then the view "completed recently" is linked with the workspace "aims for this year". I have then to reassign the view "aims for the year" to the workspace "aims for this year". Is it possible to add an option to the "setup workspace.." menu, like "lock view to workspace"?

Whilst the Public beta is a considerable improvement over earlier priviate betas in avoiding accidental changes to the view associated with a workspace,  the simply 'I forgot to switch tabs before changing view' possibility remains and I have certainly done this.

For me, a better option than locking a view to a tab is being able to set a view/zoom combination as the default for a tab with the option (associated with a hotkey) to restore that default view at any time.

The reason for this is that I do sometimes want to change a view normally associated with a particular tab - in particular to switch to the To Do view to see where a particular task is appearing in the view and then switch back again to my original view.

The default mechanism I have described will a) allow me to do this quickly without having to dismiss a warning; and b) (and more importantly) allows me to set up a custom view on a particular workspace (eg filtering by a particular contex) without needing to create a new named view and then 'save it' as the default view for that tab and c) allows me to to get back to my custom view (including zooms) with a single keystroke.

I wonder why this isn't an option for all methods? It could be implemented trivially for things like File synchronization; simply have it perform the sync every time the file gets saved.  It's a per-method option, so if for whatever reason the sync process annoyed the user for checking the network share (if syncing to a network file) each save got annoying it would be easy to turn off.

> 3. A supported XSL transforms interface so we can have more than two templates for printing and reporting.

You can have more than two templates; the help text for 3.x says to save them in to the Reports folder.  It doesn't theme as-is, it just has a different set of data that it runs.  If you want to do a full XSLT transform, can you not do that with File|Export|XML?

Also, 4.x seems to quirk out with DPI scaling turned on (as it is in my OEM install of Windows): http://i.imgur.com/57T0m.png

Andrey...  This is great, what a nice Christmas surprise!   I love the tabs and it works well with how I refine my task list from the outline, to actionable tasks, starred tasks for what I want to do and finally a view sorted by flag that orders things in which I will execute.  (I have some custom flag icons I've imported that are numbered).   I use a couple of more tabs for frequently accessed contexts for Errands, People and Computer tasks which eliminate all the different views I used to manage.   The tab feature alone has made a huge improvement on usability.

The best thing about the outline filtering is being able to exclude all those future recurring tasks that clutter up the review process.

Great upgrade and I've been using it solid without issue for a good day so far.

A remaining bug from the old version is not being able to right click on a date field, choose calendar, pick a day and have it stick.   The other options tend to work fine.

Would like to see a basic rich text option for the 'notes' field for basic formatting of bold, underlining and bulleted text someday.

It depends on how you have organised your tasks.  As with most things relating to MLO,  there are many ways of doing this but two simple possibilites are:
  1. Use the hierarchy and zoom: if all your work tasks are in one part of the hierarchy (under 'Work' parent?)  and all your home tasks are in a different part of the hierarchy, you can create two different tabs and in one use Zoom to select all the tasks under the 'Work' parent; and in the other tab, use Zoom to select the tasks under the 'Home' parent
  2. Use Contexts:  if your Home and Work tasks are scattered throughout the hierarchy,   you can assign the contexts @Work and @Home to each category of tasks,   and then create two tabs and within one tab,  use the Filter to select just those tasks with the @Work tasks and in the other to select the tasks with the @Home context.

Do either of these work for you?

The bit I missed from my proposed solution (which has been discussed in the beta forum) is that it should be more difficult to delete a tab - if I am using tabs to hold temporary views that I have set up, then I don't want to lose that tab and at the moment, it is too easy to delete a tab (my preference: make it a right click option because I find I only occasionally delete tabs).

Tommy,

Does it work with the same setup in MO 3.6.x?
What SMTP server you are using?
What error you see?
Any additional info you can provide?

We did not change this part from MLO 3.6 so I wonder what is the reason of the issue. It works fine for me in MLO 4.

Please respond on our support email.

Thanks!
Andrey.

For full isolation you should create new data file. The tabs just help you to see the info (or part of it) from the same file in different ways and switch between these views very quickly.

Have bought the new release and am like it so far. The tabs will be handy.

It seems to have lost my custom "To-Do" filters (or I can't find them), but it's hardly the end of the world.

The thing I would really like to see back is the "Indent" and "Outdent" moved out of "More" (or an option to move them out of "More"). It's something I use all the time.

Thanks for the excellent efforts here Andrey. I live by MLO!

Your custom to-do filters should be in the tree toward the bottom. You can rearrange where they are.

I completely agree about returning Indent and Outdent. On my small laptop there is plenty of space for them!  But -- they do have keyboard shortcuts, if you can remember them....

Your existing views should have been moved a My Views folder at the bottom of the Views window (I think).

Please change Windows regional settings to US, and then back again to UK - restart PC.
Please check MLO data format - it should be correct now.

in v4 when I double click on task in To-do view, sometimes I am not moved to appropriate position in outline. This is key feature, which used to work in v3.

Hi, Sumit.

Posts to the user forum, like this one, are a lot more likely to get a response from another user (like me) than from the developers, although the developers do read this forum and respond every once in a while.

First, I wanted to make sure that you are aware of the easy control on sorting and grouping that’s currently available. Make sure that MLO’s left panel is showing the details of your current view. If it’s showing the list of all views, please click once on the title “Views” to bring up the details of your view. The view details are shown in expandable sections, and near the bottom is one called “Group & Sort”. If the section is collapsed, click on the header to expand it, then click on the “sort” button to bring up a sort selection window.

Second, I agree that clicking on a column header to sort by that column would contribute to ease of use. But requests like that made in this forum (especially for areas of the program that are not already opened by developers for enhancements) do not have much track record of getting implemented. What works best is to use this forum to kick the idea around and see if anyone can suggest improvements to your idea, and then post it as a proposal at http://mlo.uservoice.com – if it gets a lot of votes it has a better chance of getting implemented.

I would suggest creating a context name for each person you assign tasks to, and assigning it to the task along with any other contexts it already has. It’s easy to create a task with multiple contexts, like @Waiting; +Joe. Another idea (if you are not using the mobile versions) would be to create a flag for each recipient and then apply the flags to the tasks.

Hi Andrey,

Let me tell congratulate you for the wonderful product you have created. I shortlisted after testing a number of other products.

I have just started using the v4 and as of now only have two requests -

1. Please make the list sort-able by clicking on any header. E.g. if i click on "context" header, I have my tasks (and sub-tasks) sorted in alphabetical order. This really helps in picking all the tasks related to one context at one go. I am sure this must be doable by multiple views but sorting by headers makes it really easier.

2. Can we have a column like "Context" where we can have "assignee" so that we can see the tasks which we have assigned to someone. Better way would be, if we can define some of the fields

Thanks

Sumit
