Reduce trials to a single image

Is there a function to compress multiple sequential images into a single image per trial in the toolbox? By compress, I am referring to the mean of all images during a trial, or else reshaping the matrix of trial images into one long vector. I have written some code of my own to do this in kind of a hack way, but it seems like I'm fighting against the design and spirit of the toolbox and I was wondering if there is a more elegant way to do this and then stick it back into the subj structure and update all the relevant fields (i.e. also create a reduced set of runs selectors, regressors, etc).

yes! i'm glad you asked.

there's a v handy function called average_object that's designed to work
in a flexible manner. it looks like we never got round to documenting
that, so i put together a simple tutorial just now:
