In my location bar the auto-complete always shows my bookmarks even if I have 'History' selected in the Tools->Options->Privacy->Location Bar selected. It is annoy.

Thought I should mention that this is Vista, and the FF version is 3.6.3

Perhaps those pages are in your browsing history. Try clearing those
websites from your history, see

Thanks for replying. I cleared the history, and my bookmarks are
still appearing in my location bar even though, I have history only ,
selected in the privacy settings. Any other suggestions?

Hi Jason,
I think your problem is that you are asking the wrong questions, you will
get answers to your questions as you asked them, which may be the wrong
answer for you.

Your problem is that you are clearing your history, therefore you will only
see bookmarked items. Stop clearing your history and you will be back to near
normal in 2-4 weeks. See the following
http://img338.imageshack.us/i/clearcache.png/

I don't understand why you would only want to see history and not bookmarks
that is intrinsically impossible. If the item is bookmarked and in history you will
see the star. The most important ones will appear at the top of the list based on
frecency which you might want to read about, not to change, but to understand
what is happening (what you see).
https://developer.mozilla.org/en/The_Places_frecency_algorithm

You do realize, I hope, that all you need to type in is any string (word/phrases/parts of words)
in any order into the location bar and they will appear in the AwesomeBar until
you hit "Enter". You can arrow down/up or use mouse to select one choice.

If you type in a url it will have more weight with frecency than just visiting a link or a bookmark.
If at the beginning of building up a history you want to add additional weight to an
entry copy the url, then paste it into the location bar and hit enter, do that 3 times
and it will very likely make a big difference as it is typed, it is very current, and it was used
at least 3 times. This will help a bit in the first three days for common things
that you don't actually bookmark.

The History side bar ("Ctrl+H") can be sorted by "View" (at the top of the sidebar),
by "Date and Site", by "Date", by "Site", by "Most Visited", and by "Last Visted".
I normally use "by Last Visted", I think the default is "by Date". There is a search
there so basically what you are asking for is what you can search for in the
History Sidebar (and it does not show the star, so that should make you happy).

If you want information on History use the history sidebar ("Ctrl+H") or History in
Library List ("Ctrl+Shift+H") Note in the Library list you can include a columns for
"Name" and "Location", you can also select "Visit Date" (last) and "Visit Count". The
other items are for bookmarks: "Keyword", "Tags" ,"Description", "Added" (date), and
"Last Modified". The "Show Parent Folder" extension provides for a "Parent Folder"
column for bookmarks, unlike the other columns, it is not sortable.
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Viewing_the_browsing_history_-_Firefox
http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/firefox/keyboard.htm

The importance of the awesomebar is to help you find or remember a url, title,
and if you put a bookmarks keyword shortcut into the title (mine are at the beginning of
the title) it will help you remember your keyword shortcuts as well, so you can just
use the keyword shortcut and not look anything up
http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/firefox/kws.htm

The fact that I have bookmarked references and also have a lot of keyword shortcuts
helps me to find Firefox documentation quickly. The top third are bookmarked
references, the bottom two thirds are keyword bookmarks all from my bookmarks toolbar.
http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/firefox/lessons/intro/k.html

The "AwesomeBar" listing as distributed in Firefox needs a big facelift by changing it
to single lines, and a lot more of them. (the most likely ones you want should always
be near the top, but being able to see more choices will make it work a lot better)
oldbar (restores single line format that was in Firefox 2)

Locationbar Limit (change options to view 30 at time, 80 total)

Firefox 3.6.13 on W7 and it's working as expected. I selected the
option you described, clear my history, started typing something that
should hit on a bookmark if that option was selected, nothing comes
up.

No, he is doing it right and asking the right question. He selected
the option under Tools, Options, Privacy, Location Bar to only display
stuff from history. Yet he is seeing stuff from bookmarks anyways.

Jason, the corresponding about:config preference is
browser.urlbar.default.behavior. What is the value for that
preference? It should be 1. If it is, I'm inclined to suspect an add-
on causing some conflict. Try starting FF in Safe Mode to see if it
behaves as per the preference.

Thanks JB,

I will try this when I get home. I was suspecting an add on as well.
You are right, I only want the history to show up when I start
typing. this is the case if I have forgotten to bookmark a site and
only remember a partial url this helps me find it. Sometimes you
don't bookmark every site you go to.

I know this seems petty, but if I don't want the book marks to show up
in the url bar, and I have selected that option, then they shouldn't
be showing up in there.

Thanks
Jason

Why not. If I bookmark a page I visit then it is both visited and bookmarked,
so it will show up as both history and as a bookmark.

But I still think you are not making use of the awesomebar which is a lot
more powerful than what you had in Firefox 2. You simply do not need to type
in the prefix from the beginning of a url for a complete url, you can type any part of the title or ur.

So if you've been to http://kb.mozillazine.org/Dev_:_Firefox_Chrome_URLs
and you can only remember "chrome" and it was in the mozillazine kb
you could simply type chrome zine into the location bar, and if you
had bookmarked it you shouldn't have trouble finding it 3 years later.

Did you try FF Safe Mode to rule out an add-on as being responsible?
You have the correct value for the preference that controls that so
something else is causing that behaviour.

I did try safe mode and turned off all the add ons as well. I
downloaded an Add On called Old Location Bar, which treats it like the
old one and only displays history. like I want. I don't want my
bookmarks showing up everytime I start typing something in the
location bar.

Thanks

You're welcome. Glad it works now. There must have been an add-on or
something else causing a problem with 3.6.x because it works as
expected for me (and I suspect for others because you are the first
that I've seen bring up this problem on this list).
