A day or so ago, I noticed that the status line, which had been present
and helpful for many years, is suddenly absent.
My first reaction was that perhaps for some reason the Download
Statusbar addon (which is present) is suddenly overwriting the other
content, but this is not the case: even when this addon is disabled, the
status bar is not seen.
How may I find the cause of this behavior?

It is a "feature" of FF4.
The status bar has been replaced with the add-on bar in FF4.

To restore the FF3.6 behavior, install the Status-4-Evar add-on.

It's non-existent in FF4+...

First, do View => Toolbars => check "addon-bar" and then install the
extension Status-4-Evar that Christian recommended.

FF4.01 eliminated the status bar in favor of a better documented, and
maintainable 'add ons bar'. You can turn it on by selecting
view/toolbars/ add-ons bar. Most of the add-ons that put things in the
status bar will then use the add-ons bar. Also, you can install
Status-4-Evar extension that will return the other functions formerly on
the status bar.

Hi Stan,
To help you with the options of Status-4-Evar, I put together a web page
http://dmcritchie.mvps.org/firefox/status4evar.htm
The addons bar is the only toolbar to have it's own shortcut Ctrl+/ to toggle it on and off.
Though the Alt key will display the menubar temporarily in Firefox and other browsers.
Ctrl+L and Ctrl+K will bring up the location bar and the search bar and place the cursor inside..

Thank you for this clue.
But, in my ignorance, I previously restored the renamed bar another
(more complicated) way. My thought was that some extension was causing
the problem, so I disabled all the addons (which is also a cute new
feature); since that didn't change anything, I then reenabled them all
-- voila, the bar is back.
Your way is better. ;-)

Aha! That clears up the mystery of how the bar vanished in the first
place. I must have somehow pressed CTRL/ inadvertently.
