I am a recent user of Firefox, having used MS IE for years. And I hate
Microsoft's terrible products, but at least with IE I've never had a
website take over my browser and prevent me from moving on. I just
uploaded Firefox 3.5.3 tonight, so I'm running the latest.

Went to NY Times website, clicked on an op-ed piece link, started
reading the article, then a pop-up appeared stating I needed to
immediately run a virus scan. The pop-up was from:
protection-check07.com. Rather than hit any of the pop-up buttons, I
control-alt-deleted and killed Firefox. Opened up Firefox anew, same
message. Again and again until Firefox announced it was embarrassed.
I'm sorry, but this is amateur hour stuff when you let this happen.
I've only had your browser on my computer less than a week and I have no
confidence whatsoever that you can provide a safe Internet experience.

I just had the same experience (9/13/09). It seems stranged that I
hadn't clicked on anything before this happened. I too was reading an
opinion on NYTimes. Perhaps they should know about this?!

Same here. I had just clicked to the third page of Barbara
Ehrenreich's oped. Can't make it happen again.

It does not appear to be a Firefox problem. It just happened to me
using Safari on my Mac. And like the rest of you it was associated
with the reading of a NY Times op-ed piece. The Times needs to get on
top of this pronto.

Just happened to me in Chrome. Question is: Do we now have virus/
malware infection? If so, how to kill? My norton system scan is 100%
clean. Thoughts?

I've been getting these protection-check7 pop ups when I look at the
NY Times Obituary page, something I do first thing every morning. I
cure it by hitting the cancel and back button until I get out of the
obituary I'm trying to read. I too think this is a NY Times problem,
not Firefox. My McAfee doesn't find anything hidden in my computer.
Nothing is sacred any more.

Just interrupt the fake virus scan with the Back button and you'll
return to the NYTimes page. It's rude and annoying but not a big deal.
