Hi Everyone:

Amidst all that is going on with Mozilla and Firefox 3.5 right now,
Fennec remains a high-priority project that localization teams should
keep in their sights. Because our development team continues to reduce
the blocker bugs and improve the mobile browser's performance, we have
not set a release schedule for Fennec (with string and code freezes),
but we intend to localize and ship Fennec in the very same manner as we
ship Firefox.

Given that fact, we are encouraging teams to either begin or continue
work on their localizations. A few things to consider as you work:

1. The Fennec UI has roughly 370 strings needing translation, but
will continue to change a bit until we see a string freeze.
2. Localization teams can find the status of their builds on the l10n
dashboard here: http://l10n.mozilla.org/dashboard/?tree=fennec10x
3. Official builds from Mozilla can be found here:
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-mobile-trunk-l10n/
* Please keep in mind that not all the builds on the l10n
server are shown on this ftp site. This is a known bug and
we are working to fix it.
* You can test these builds if you have a proper device.
Email me if you have questions.
4. If your localization is not listed on the l10n dashboard, please
let us know and we will be sure to set you up.
5. We intend to start generating builds that you can test through
your desktop. Those are not ready, but, in the meantime, you can
submit translations of strings.

Gandalf will be following up this email with some more specific pointers
about where to find files ready for translation. Stas is also working
on his last productization posts that we will post this week.

As always, please send the l10n-drivers your questions. Axel will help
with builds. Gandalf should be a terrific resource if you have any
technical questions. Stas will continue to be your resource for
productization elements. And, Pascal will continue to manage all
website projects related to Fennec. No question is off limits, please
just ask.

Warm regards,

Seth

Hi seth,

I have a few questions about fennec l10n builds.

Is there any l10n wince builds yet?
If not (I think so), is there any schedule for it?

In some country (including Japan) we cannot get any Nokia N8xx device and we
want to use/test with windows mobile devices.

As for us, I build/repackage/customize the windows mobile builds and possible to
test it but for other locale, I hope we can get wince l10n builds soon.

Hello Seth,

sadly, I think nobody from my translation group has a Nokia Internet
Tablet, do you know if we are going to have l10n emulated builds so we
could check our localizations

Thanks!

You could install maemo in a virtual machine (VirtualBox is free,
www.virtualbox.org or VMWare player which is also free). The VMWare
images are here: http://maemovmware.garage.maemo.org/ . VirtualBox can
handle the vmware images as well, but you have to create the virtual
machine and just use the vmware disk image.

As a side note, Fennec's translation files are updated regularly on
https://l10n.mozilla.org/narro/narro_project_language_list.php?l=en&p=16
so if you want to translate there, just ask for permissions if you
don't have them already.

Did I misunderstand something? The l10n-nightly files are labeled
"linux-arm", shouldn't we looking for ARM Maemo in QEMU instead of x86
Maemo in VirtualBox?

A little googleing did find something about making an QEMU N810
image... haven't try it through.

I've just tried the Hardy Desktop VM in Virtualbox (for uncompressing
the image you will need hlspit and then 7za), and despite the fennec
file is now executable (not in the Fedora Core 8 machine I'm) I get
the following error:

maemo@maemo-desktop:~/Desktop/fennec$ ./fennec
/scratchbox/tools/bin/misc_runner: /targets/links/scratchbox.config:
No such file or directory

I don't know if I should install anything else in the VM, or filling a
bug in bugzilla.mozilla.org?

Cheers,

I'm looking over here: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Mobile/Build/cs2007q3
and it seems it's more complicated than I thought. It would probably
be wiser to ask someone from the mobile team or someone who actually
knows the build process.

Yes,

If they could offer some guidelines and prepare a kind of 'tutorial'
could be nice.
I realized I should execute the binary in scratchbox (provided in the
very distribution by default) and I changed some kernel parameters
through proc, but I still get some errors when executing ./fennec.
Couldn't load XPCOM
I checked with ldd xulrunner/libxul.so if so library could be missing and yes:

libmozjs.so => not found (0x00000000)
libsmime3.so => not found (0x00000000)
libssl3.so => not found (0x00000000)
libnss3.so => not found (0x00000000)
libnssutil3.so => not found (0x00000000)
libsoftokn3.so => not found (0x00000000)
libplds4.so => not found (0x00000000)
libplc4.so => not found (0x00000000)
libnspr4.so => not found (0x00000000)
liblocation.so.0 => not found (0x00000000)
libgpsbt.so.0 => not found (0x00000000)
libgpsmgr.so.0 => not found (0x00000000)

So, I don't know if I should compile it again or how...

Cheers,

Is there any l10n guide?

With best regards,

Hi from galician [gl] localization team:

We don't have fennec listed in dashboard:
http://l10n.mozilla.org/dashboard/?locale=gl

so I understand that we don't have the project correctly setup,
and we want to have Fennec in galician language.

Could you help us?

Thanks

For those that would like to join the party around fennec l10n and are
not yet part of the build, please follow up in
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=495440 to be added to the
fennec builds.

Any idea what the cab's are, and how to handle those?

Maybe a silly question, but: how am I supposed to run these packages
when usually applications on Maemo are installed in .deb format?
I've tried unpacking the archive and I ended up with a "fennec" folder,
but then I don't know how to proceed (tried launching the "fennec" file
in a ssh session without results).

I don't know the real answer, though ssh sounds wrong ad-hoc. I'd expect
theret to be a local shell window on the device.

There is a bug on us not having l10n debs, for which I need input from
someone that understands those,
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=490482.

Yes, there's a "x terminal", but the error is the same

Thanks for the bug, I'll be watching it.

Move feenec folder to home dir (or any other filesystem with exec
permission, since the internal flash doesn't) and then launch fennec
from the extracted directory, I did this directly on the device, no idea
if ssh needs more setup or not.
