I'm switching to Thunderbird so I can more easily access my IMAP email
from multiple machines (home/work/family/etc.). I don't want to run
Thunderbird from a USB drive 'cause I don't want to risk losing the
drive (and any info that might be in the drive) nor do I want to play
around with USB drive encryption.

That being said, I'm using SyncKolab to share address book and calendar
info but would like to find/write similar functionality to share spam
filter info (profile\[profile name]\training.dat) and message filters
(profile\[profile name]\[mailtype]\[mailserver]\msgFilterRules.dat)

Does anybody here know of functionality for doing this or have
suggestions?

Thanks.

Yes, stop beating your head against the wall and use server side
functionality. Server side filters are the coolest thing since sliced
bread. No more watching your messages get filtered every time you open
your email client or trying to keep your filters synched between clients,
with server side filters, the filtering is done at delivery time instead
of user access time so you can do much more powerful things like forward
important messages to your cell.

Also, why not setup a webmail server instead of maintaing X installs of
TB? Squirrelmail and IMP are both excellent open source webmail servers
that provide address book, server side sort rule creation, spam filtering,
in short everything you described and once you've got it all on the web,
your email is wherever you want to be.

I know this isn't a TB based solution and I realize the leap from
application based email to web based email can be a tall order. It's also
possible you don't have the resources or time to setup a dedicated webmail
server but if you can I'd strongly suggest it.

Jay,

Thanks for the input.

I'm actually already in a bit of pain using TB as I (have to admit)
like (and am very used to) Outlook 2000. But it was getting to the
point that I wouldn't get to my PC more than a few times a month and
was starting to miss important messages. I tried IMAP with Outlook 2K
but had so many problems I gave up.

Anyway, my host currently has an older version of SquirrelMail but I
find the interface just clunky enough that I end up not using it. I'll
look into IMP. Due to my extensive use of Outlook 2K at work (and
previously at home) I'm so used to the drag-n-drop interface it's just
hard to, well, take webmail seriously. I think I might be happy with
RoundCube but the install process scares me (and what the heck do they
need MySQL for?). Not that I can't do MySQL (I code ASP/MS SQL web
sites for a living and managed to get Joomla going w/out too much
hassle).

OK - I looked at IMP...some nice ideas, but I think it's the multiple
page reloads required for just filing a message that get to me.

In any case, do you have any suggestions for server side filtering?
I'm hoping for something that a) puts things in a Spam folder and a)
can be trained (meaning I'm not coding up a .procmail file every time I
find a new spam variant). I've been bit by so many ISP based spam
filters killing legit messages that I just turn them all off now and
let TB (or SpamBayes in Outlook 2K) handle it.

I think I've got the resources, and maybe even the know-how, to do this
stuff. If anybody wants to send me some time, however, I'll gladly
accept it. :-)

Thanks again for your response!

Hi there,

I'm looking for a similar solution for a POP3-Checker by using the
training.dat from TB. It would be great to have some information about
the file-structure and how this data can be interpreted.

I was searching in the dev-docs, but nothing found...

Greetings,
Matthias
