Sadly, it's actually pretty clear at this point that this won't be
able to hit Firefox 3.1. It's the type of change that probably needs
broad discussion as it's changing a fairly fundamental principle of
Firefox, which is to be as fast and basic as possible. I happen to
agree that we should be aiming to make the new tab experience more
helpful, welcoming and interactive, but we should make sure to weigh
that against concerns of losing responsiveness or the ability to
quickly open a new tab and get something done. Most of that is
addressed in the bug report and the design spec that you link to,
though!
I would encourage discussion about merits and design ideas in this
thread, and discussions about implementation and dependencies to be
tracked through the bug.
