21 schools shut after teen dies of staph

Virginia student contracted drug-resistant strain of infection

BEDFORD, Va. - A high school student who was hospitalized for more than a week with an antibiotic-resistant staph infection has died, and officials shut down 21 schools for cleaning to keep the illness from spreading.

Ashton Bonds, 17, a senior at Staunton River High School, died Monday after being diagnosed with Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, his mother said.

"I want people to know how sick it made my son," Veronica Bonds said.

Staph infections, including the serious MRSA strain, have spread through schools nationwide in recent weeks, according to health and education officials.

MRSA is a strain of staph bacteria that does not respond to penicillin and related antibiotics but can be treated with other drugs. The infection can be spread by skin-to-skin contact or sharing an item used by an infected person, particularly one with an open wound.

Bedford Superintendent James Blevins said at a news conference Tuesday that the schools will be closed for cleaning Wednesday.

Many of the infections are being spread in gyms and locker rooms, where athletes — perhaps suffering from cuts or abrasions — share sports equipment. Ashton Bonds played football last year but was not playing this season.

Ashton went to Bedford Memorial Hospital on Oct. 4 after complaining of pain in his side, his mother said. He was sent home after doctors ruled out appendicitis, but was readmitted three days later and transported to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Last week doctors diagnosed Ashton with a MRSA infection that had spread to his kidneys, liver, lungs and the muscles around his heart.

Early Thursday morning, Ashton had to be sedated and put on a ventilator. He was about to undergo surgery to drain the infection from his lungs when doctors detected a blood clot near his heart. Bonds said the clot was inoperable.

Dear Robert: Very well might be!!! That's why it is so urgent to get the funding for Olle to do the studies that focus on already well-accepted "radiation effects" -- i.e., "markers for irradiation" -- and to have those studies reconfirm that immune deficiency does, in fact, occur after sleeping very close to electric items.

Then, the same studies can be done to help determine whether the same changes occur as result of WiFi exposures since WiFi seems to be emerging as an even bigger threat. Obviously, concerns re cellular antennae and high voltage line exposures need to be incorporated into the results of the other studies as well as eventual studies to determine and;or confirm that the same changes do occur as result of cellular antennae and high voltage lines.

With the publicity that is generated by the Karolinska announcements, it should become easier to obtain funding. As you know, the EMF/EMR pollution "overall issue" is a huge concern -- it is a matter now of continuing to inform (as you have been doing as well as Olle, Hans, Martin, Iris and so many others.....) -- as we know "industrialized/electrified societies" can not afford to ignore this any longer and, as it is, will most likely never recover from the damage that has already occurred (from every aspect)........

As we know and should be obvious to others, if we continuously point out that ionizing radiation as is used for cancer treatments are known to cause severe decline in neutrophils and other changes in white blood cells AND, we "drive home" the "facts" that nonionizing, EMF/EMR is also causing the identical changes ("markers for irradiation), the public we are able to attract especially with help from Klaus will soon help demand publicity. This isn't easy, as you know but patience and persistence is starting to yield important changes.

Sorry, "rushing," -- have many plans but family problems have "overwhelmed" -- hope to have several very important letters ready soon.... Take care - Joanne
