In November 2005, the mayor
of Ruitz (1588 inhabitants) reported, to the
DDASS of Pas de
Calais, the occurrence of two brain cancer cases in children
who
attended a Ruitz kindergarten.
One of the children died in
2004; the second case was diagnosed in November
2005. Near the
school is a base station (relay station for mobile telephony
SFR),
in use since the beginning of October 1998.
The assumption of
a link between the occurrence of the children's brain
cancers and
the exposure to electromagnetic fields of radio-frequency (CEM
RF)
emitted by the antenna cannot be dismissed.
The main
scientific research regarding possible hazardous effects of the
CEM
RF are indeed related to the use of mobile phones (risk of
tumors following
an exposure centralized on the head and on the
neck) and not to an exposure
to relay-station radiation. Moreover
the measurements of the electromagnetic
fields made in Ruitz has
been confirmed to be of low exposure levels, at
least lower than
the regulated limits.
