I use 640x480 crop mode on my 550D to take planetary video that gets
converted to a final image with Registax.

Here is an example.

http://webpages.marshall.edu/~maynard169/jup-9-1-2010.jpg

The FPS override doesn't seem to work in video crop mode.

Is this possible? A lower frame rate, say 10-15 fps would be
desirable, especially dimmer planets like Mars and Saturn.

Thanks,
Brent

Did you know that you can run the intravalometer in silent pic mode
(no shutter required) WITH the FPS function turned on! So you can have
1/4 sec exposures in Live view resolution. But it wont be 10 frames
per second. But it will allow in more light per exposure.

I've never tried the silent picture mode.
I'll need to read up and play with that.

The big difference between deep sky astrophotograpy and planetary
imaging
is number of frames and duration.

A typicaly deep sky image will contain 75-200 subs taken over a
period of
2-4 hours, even longer for the faint stuff.

Planetary you want 1000-2000 frames in no more than couple of minutes.

For example, you have a 2 minute window on Jupiter due to the high
rotational
speed of the planet. Any longer than that the surface features will
start to
blur. This is why CCD based webcams have ruled planetary imaging for
the past
decade.

Alex sent me a test version to try, and so far seems to be working as
expected
in crop mode. All I need now is a clear night, which means it is
going to snow
for the next few days here.

The image in my original post is from the 550D, and is the best I have
been able
to obtain with a DSLR. It is not as good as this image I took back in
2006 with a $70 webcam.

I hope this latest feature of ML will let us attain and even surpass
the webcam
quality.

Here is an indoor test of the test build Alex sent me.
http://webpages.marshall.edu/~maynard169/4fps-compare.jpg

The noise profile on the 4fps image is much less than the 60fps image
at a similar exposure.
As in other forms of imaging, noise is an Astrophotographers second
worst enemy, clouds being first.

Well Silent Pic will be to slow (at roughly 1fps), I never considered
planetary rotational errors, hmmm. Your image of Jupiter is stunning!
Congratulatios. I wondered why you wanted low res 640 mode but I guess
the objects don't fill the screen anyway? Otherwise why not shoot in
HD 1080 at lower FPS?

BTW does image stacking increase detail or just photon catching?

Stacking will increase the detail and reduce the noise.

Here is a quick test from tonight. Not the best conditions, high
thin
clouds and unstable seeing conditions. The final image is not that
good.

setup - 550D and a Celestron C8 with a 2.5X barlow for an effective
focal length of 5000mm.

Preliminary results are excellent. The image on the right is a stack
of over 1000 frames at the default 60fps in crop mode. The noise
in the 3X crop is apparent.

The image on the left is 175 frames stacked and the image is much
better with a lot less frames stacked. Look how smooth the 3X
crop is on the 5fps image.

Wow! That is stunning!Shame you don't have any rim light out there ;)
a recent pic of Enceladus I saw had Sun for edge light and Saturn
shine for the fill. It looked awesome.

Why did you choose 200ISO instead of 100ISO?

Thanks,

I have a iso100 clip, but I tried to pick the one closest to the 60fps
iso3200 in exposure.

I captured a whole series at 5, 10, and 20fps at iso ranges 100, 200,
400, 640, and 800.

I hope to process them all for a comparison but it is getting late and
I have to work
tomorrow. :^(

Hi Brent, is it not possible for Jupiter to have a stack that is projected on a sphere and then rotated accordingly to the 10 hour Jupiter day ?  So you could even animate the stacked globe of Jupiter ? I am just a fan and doing nightlapses and look through my telescope.. but may start using the telescope with my 5d soon..

Thanks for reading Matthias

Nice test, Brent!

Here's the autoexec with FPS working in crop mode. This feature should work on 550D, 60D and 600D (since other cameras don't have crop mode).

For other cameras, there are some minor fixes, mostly regarding FPS.
https://bitbucket.org/hudson/magic-lantern/changesets

The idea with silent picture is pretty good too. In most cameras, in 5x zoom mode you get a 1:1 crop from the sensor at 1024x680, or something close. And at 2...5fps, it is possible to record uncompressed 422 footage without any problem - even on slower cards. With fast cards and large buffer it will probably reach around 10fps (with a bit of luck, maybe even close to 20fps on 5D2 and 50D).

With current implementation, you can get something very similar with this setup:
- silent picture: single, in burst mode
- enable 5x zoom
- FPS override at around 3 fps (you may try higher values too)
- half-shutter sticky (from Tweaks menu)

Burst mode will save images as fast as possible, so at low FPS, you will get some duplicate frames. I've tried this trick on 60D.

Thank you for your great works!
Thanks to you, my 550D is getting more and more monsterous than ever!

I did some simple tests with L.View menus,
and I guess I found a small glitch related to spot meters.

Percent and RGB seems to be working fine,
but IRE's always points the lowest number, such as 0 or -1.
(I remember it happened on the build of Feb.04, too)

Other L.View functions worked just fine as always :D
I wish my report be helpful for you and other users.

Thanks!

Good catch, I'll fix it in the next update.

Also, on the 5D, If I highlight HDR video and try to adjust the ISO by
hitting picture style nothing happens.

On my 5d the crop marks load a lot slower than the previous update.
Also the shutter wheel does not change menu settings anymore, it
adjusts the shutter speed even though Im in the magic lantern menu.
