Lightning Photography

Can anyone offer any guides on the best methods for capturing Lighting
with ML motion detect.

I tried shooting manual, I read through the manual/guide but I had no
success, it would either take to late or not at all.

I live in Tampa, FL so it would be a shame not to capture what happens
here, especially with a photo stack!

Either use bulb mode, or use the ML's motion-sensing feature.

I didn't try this feature on real stuff yet, but a user posted some
examples of lightning pictures a while ago.

You may get better results with silent pictures. Another advice is to
turn off GlobalDraw.

Thanks Alex,
In the coming months I'll have plenty of opportunity to test what
works. Tampa gets good electrical storms almost every evening in the
rainy season.

If I'm successful I'll do a tutorial and repost.

There is a bug which prevents motion detection from running when the
image is severely underexposed, so make sure the two numbers displayed
on the screen are greater than 0. I've noticed it right now when
trying to run some speed tests with

I had good success with 2 second exposures with iso set to 800 ( I
think). Motion detection on, T2i, Tokina 11-16mm @ 11mm f/2.8.

I've used motion detection and it takes a while to focus correctly, I can't
get it to work with manual focus. I would have thought it would take some
huge lightning (duration) to catch it with motion detection and to get it
too focus correctly? Be interesting to see more of these results

I am the one that succesfully tested the motion detection a while ago 

it works better during the night than during daylight but also works in daylight

the shutter speed choosen is based in the backround exposure since the lighthing is faster than any choosed speed in camera .. 

meaning .. 

a 1/10 will give you the same as 1/100 or 4 seconds ...   

so the lighthing exposure depents on iso + aperture

this will also be your motion trigger sensibility ..    

look from your window .. search for a lighting cloud ... point the camera .. 

and that's it ... if the iso and aperture are right you will be able to get EVERY single ray

the ray  shots 60 to 83 are ML motion  used

oh .. also forgot to mention .. 

if you have IS , disable it 

and focus must be set to manual

you are shooting something that is in the "infinite" focusing range anyway

Lock down your focus in advance, and flip the lens to manual focus.  You should be able to get a reasonable focus on the cloud edges.  Stop down a bit to ensure a decent depth of field, and you are set to go.  I also recommend locking down the ISO and exposure in advance to make sure the camera only needs to snap the picture.
