SMK: I received this in an e-mail today --

Hello,

As a fan of geography, maps, and roads, I enjoy reading your website.
It provides me with lots of interesting information and tidbits.

I just wanted to pass along that signs went up near ICC work zones in
Maryland last week. In particular, I noticed this at the intersection
of Shady Grove Road and Crabbs Branch Way, going from east to west. It
says something like:

"Thanks for your patience. MD-200" with the number being shown as the
typical Maryland route sign.

So, yes, it does appear that the ICC will numbered as Route 200 -- kind
of similarily to Route 100 outer band near Baltimore.

Such a sign can be found at the edge of the work zone on I-370 near
the Shady Grove Road interchange - I saw it last Saturday.

I suppose I was right - MD 100 for the Baltimore Outer Beltway, and MD
200 for the Washington Outer Beltway. The question that continues to
puzzle me is why the road itself is not being built to urban
Interstate standards, but instead only to urban freeway standards.

I see no declaration that the design doesn't meet Interstate standards.

Here is the ICC project's Record of Decision (ROD) --
http://www.iccproject.com/record-of-decision.php
http://iccstudy.org/PDFs/rod_final.pdf

According to the ROD, which is the latter document, it will be a
controlled access highway, which means a freeway, but a search for the
word 'interstate' only finds two occurrences, and neither is in the
context of its design standards or its route designation.

"The Selected Alternative (Corridor 1, as identified on Pages VII-94 to
VII-95 of the Final EIS and depicted in Figure 1 in this ROD) extends
approximately 18 miles from I-370/I-270 near the Shady Grove Metrorail
Station to US 1 between Beltsville and Laurel. Approximately 16 of the
18 miles are located in Montgomery County and approximately two miles
are in Prince George’s County. The Selected Alternative is a controlled
access highway with eight interchanges, located at MD 355, Shady Grove
Metrorail Access/Shady Grove Road, MD 97 (Georgia Avenue), MD 182
(Layhill Road), MD 650 (New Hampshire Avenue), US 29/Briggs Chaney Road,
I-95 and Virginia Manor Road, as well as an at-grade intersection with
US 1".
