chronologically ordered date index

Hi,

I want to include in an history doc an index of dates, the dates being
chronologically ordered.
I am using french format of date : the day number the name of the month
followed by the year ; it look like 1 january 2005 in place of january
the 1st of 2005.

Until now i get alphanumerically classifioed index : 1 jan 2006
standing before 14 july 2005.

Hi, Jean-Paul,

There is no automatic method in Word to make an index that sorts by dates,
numeric values, or anything except alphanumeric order. You will need extra
steps after the document is complete and the index field has been updated.

Select the index and press Ctrl+Shift+F9 to unlink the field. This converts
the result of the index field to plain text. One side effect of this is that
the index cannot be updated automatically if the pagination of the rest of
the document changes; therefore it is important to do this only after the
document is complete.

The plain-text index can now be re-sorted by date. Just select all the index
entries, go to Table > Sort, and choose to sort by paragraphs, with type
Date, in ascending order.

Alternatively, you can format the dates as 2005-01-01 and 2005-07-14.
