Troubleshooting Get Started Add-in Tab

I installed the "Get Started Tab" add-in for Word, but it does not display in
the ribbon. I checked the add-ins under options and it *is* in the list as
mscoree.dll.

So I went to "Manage Com add-ins" and it is in the list but the box wasn't
selected.
I selected the box and closed the window, but upon visiting that screen
again, the box is unchecked.

Am I doing something wrong? I can't figure this out.

I would also like to add that Word reports "A runtime error occured when
loading the add-in."

What's causing this error?

I've installed .Net framework 2.0 and updated it.

Soon ready to give up.

I'm having the same problem right down to the revisit and finding the box
unckedked. I hope an MVP person jumps in.

I installed the Getting Started Add-in to see if it worked for me and it
does. It displays without any additional intervention.

Do you have any other add-ins installed? (Aside from the SmartTags and
Document Inspector) I'm wondering if there's a conflict with another add-in.

Beth, Terry, appreciate the assistance. To Terry's question: per <Word
Options> <Add-Ins> one Add-In is listed as active; "Personal Name (Outlook
email recipients)" the Type is Smart Tag.

Again, I go the route of <Manage:> <COM Add-ins> <GO> a dialogue box appears
containing one entry "Microsoft Office Word 2007 Get Started Tab". I check

Now I've just noticed that in a new banner above the active document appears
"Security Warning Application add-ins Have been disabled <Options>" I click
<Options>, a dialogue box appears "Security Alert - Add-In" containing the
text "This application add-in has been disabled. Add-ins might contain
viruses or other security hazards. And "Warning: There is no digital
signature available" (editorially: from Microsoft??!!!) and "Add-in:
Microsoft Office Word 2007 Get Started Tab". There are two buttons that may
be selected: <Help protect me from unknown content (recomended)> and <Enable
the add-in for this session only>. I select the <Enable...> button, click
<OK> the dialogue box closes. And there is no Get Started tab. I close and
restart Word and there is not Get Started tab.

And by the way, this follows a clean install of Win XP Hm and a fresh
install of Office 2007 Standard.

Check your Trust Center settings, in Word Options click Trust Center and
then click the Trust Center Settings button. What option is selected for
Add-ins and which option is selected for Macro Settings?

For Add-ins the 2nd of 4 selections is checked: "Required application
add-ins to be signed by trusted publisher"

For Macros:
Under the "Macro Settings" banner, the middle choice is checked: "Disable
all macros with notification"
Under the "Macro Developer Settings" banner the single choice "Trust access
to the VBA project object model" is unchecked.

If the "Require application add-ins to be signed by trusted publisher" is
selected and if the add-in doesn't have digital certificate you can trust,
then I'd say that's why the Getting Started tab is not functioning. If you
clear the option (which isn't selected by default) and restart Word does the
Getting Started tab display?

If you're getting a runtime error that makes me think you may not have
Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0 installed which is required for the add-in.

Let me ask you this, do you really need the Get Started tab? All it contains
is links to different areas on Office Online, such as these newsgroups, a
link to the Word 2007 Demo, the Interactive Guide, etc. If you do then we
can work on the runtime error but the last time I encountered this type of
issue I ended up disabling another add-in that used Microsoft .Net Framework
1.0.

I had this problem on a recent installation of Office 2007.
I installed the Get Started Tab programs for Word and Excel,
but neither would show up on the ribbon. Framework 1.1, 2.0
and 3.0 were installed on this system.

During installation of Office 2007, I disabled certain features I felt
I would never need, including Visual Basic for Applications,
Digital Certificate for VBA Projects, and .NET Programmability
Support.

After going to Add/Remove programs and changing MS Office 2007
to enable these 3 features, I went back into Word 2007 and the Get
Started tab still wasn't there on the ribbon.

So I went back to Add/Remove programs, uninstalled the Word 2007
Get Started Tab program, rebooted the system (as it requested),
reinstalled the Word 2007 Get Started Tab program, went back into
Word 2007, and lo and behold, the Get Started tab is now on the system.

I'll have to uninstall and reinstall the Excel and PowerPoint versions to
get those working, too.

So, these Get Started tab programs require either VBA, VBA digital
certificate support, or .NET Programmability Support enabled (or
all three). The installation program should be updated to check that
the needed options are present during installation.

This problem only seems to happen to XP users, Vista doesn't have this issue.
The "Getting Started" tab needs two things in order to work properly under
Windows XP:

1.) .NET 2.0 installed
2.) .NET Programmability Support installed

.NET 2.0 you can find at www.microsoft.com by searching for ".NET 2.0
Redistributable" or through Windows Update. The .NET Programmability Support
is an option in the advanced installation screens when you install Office
2007. To enable this feature, go to Add/Remove Programs and click on Office
2007. Click "change" if it's there, otherwise click "uninstall" and then on
the next screen look for a "change" or an "add/remove features" option. From
there, you need to find the installed components for Office 2007. Make sure
that ".NET Programmability Support" is selected to run on your computer (you
may have to dig a bit to find it). After this you will need to probably
uninstall and reinstall the "Getting Started" bars. They should now work
just fine.
