apostrophes turn to equal signs

Whenever I open a Word doc written on another computer with the same Word
2007 on it, several odd symbols such as @ appears. The most prevalent probem
is that all the 's turn to ='s. e.g. Bob's becomes Bob=s when the doc is
opened. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the program 2X. The program I am
using is Office Home and Student 2007.

Thanks

The usual reason for this is that the document originated (possibly many
versions back) in WordPerfect, and characters from the WP Typographic
Symbols font were used for quotes, apostrophes, dashes, and the like (this
dates back to when fonts didn't routinely contain these characters). As long
as you open the document on a computer where the WP font is installed,
you'll see them looking more or less as you expect (though close examination
will reveal that they are not identical to the characters from the Default
Paragraph Font). But when the document is opened on a computer that doesn't
have that font installed, the corresponding characters in the Default
Paragraph Font will be displayed (that is, an apostrophe in WP Typographic
Symbols is character 61; in Times New Roman and other Unicode fonts, that
character is an equals sign), hence the =, @, etc. I'm afraid at this point
your only recourse is to use Find and Replace to replace them.

Note, however, that if you send the document to someone who does not have
the font installed, the same problem will arise.
