Spell check using wrong language dictionary

I have been writing essays for the last four days and Word has been
functioning flawlessly. Yesterday while completing my last essay, Word
suddenly began installing a component.

From that point on, spell check for that one document alone was insisting on
using the French dictionary and only for the first few paragraphs of the
document. Any and all efforts to change the spell check dictionary were
fruitless.

Any suggestions to correct this problem would be greatly appreciated.

CTRL+A then tools > language > set language - set to English and uncheck
automatically detect language.
