I have the same problem, which I can also guarantee is extremely frustrating.
I have a Dell with 1 gig of memory, Word 2003, and also use templates and VBA
programming I have created.

Oh yea, I neglected to mention; I am not using Norton, but McAfee EPo.

The usual cause is interference from anti virus software, but equally it
could be the interference from another add-in - see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm for troubleshooting
tips.
