2007 Compatibility Mode

How do I turn off compatibility mode? I created the document in MS Word 2003
but then resaved the document in MS Word 2007 and then renamed it and resaved
it again in MS Word 2007 but it still says compatibilty mode and when I tried
to do something (can't recall now what it was...) it said that the feature
was limited because I was in compatibility mode..how do I get it out of
compatibility mode?

Open the document in Word 2007. Then click the Office button and
choose Convert. When that finishes, the document won't be in
compatibility mode any more. Then you can save it as a .docx (Word
2007 format) file.

Hello, most of people I deal with are still under MSO 2003... They can't read
my doc 2007 version... How can I be compatible automatically with every one
without doing any manipulation every time I use and a word doc 2007, thanks.

Click the Office button, click the Word Options button at the bottom of the
menu, select Save on the left side, and set the "Save files in this format"
dropdown to "Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc)".

As you understood, I am running MSO 2007... To be quite honest I totally
dislike the new configuration of the menu…. I don’t see the logic behind
that... takes too long to find what you are looking for, not easy to remember
and very confusing… Is there any way to move this Menu 2007 to the 2003
style? Every time, I opening up a new document, I'm on one set layout... I
don't the different layout page we used to have. Where are they?

There are a couple of different issues here.

There's no way to truly go back to the 2003 layout, but there are some
things you can do. Here's a review of two add-ins that go part of the

If you still have the installation disk for Word 2003, you can run
both versions side by side, as described at
http://word2007bible.herbtyson.com/2007/04/15/word-2007-and-word-2003-coexisting/

If you just want to find the other templates (what you called a
"different layout page"), click the Office button, click New to get
the New Document dialog, and click "My Templates" or any of the other
categories along the left side.

Or, if you'd rather use the File > New dialog from Word 2003, you can
get that: Click the down arrow at the end of the Quick Access Toolbar
and choose More Commands. In the dialog, set the category to Commands
Not In The Ribbon. Scroll down and select the command New Document Or
Template, and click the Add button to send it over to the right-hand
list. You can use the up and down buttons next to the list to change
the command's position. Click OK, and the icon (a white page) will
appear on the Quick Access Toolbar.

I have this problem too but it won't let me "convert" It only allowing me to
open, print, send, and close the document. Any ideas? Thanks!

If the document's file has an extension of .docx or .docm instead of .doc,
it has already been "converted" and the conversion option won't appear on
the Office button menu. If that isn't the case, and if "Compatibility Mode"
still appears in the title bar when the document is open, try using the Save
As dialog and changing the "Save As Type" box to "Word Document (*.docx)".

Jay,

I found myself in the same problem. I guess I accidently clicked something
and it prevented me from touching (editing) the wordpad. I've tried clicking
on the Office button, but it would not allow me to (it's not colored, it's
gray), and also tried doing the CTRL O and repair, but unfortunately nothing
happened. Can you help me diagnose this problem?

Hell, on another note, I couldn't even make a thread here about this which
made me more frustrated than I already am with this crap and it's hidden
messages. Thanks in advance.

If it doesn't work in Safe Mode, it's possible that you have a trial version
that's expired or a regular version that hasn't been activated, but that
shouldn't block access to the Office button. You could try repairing the Office
installation, starting from Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.

If Word works in Safe Mode, then one of three things is causing the problem: A
corrupted registry entry, a corrupted Normal.dotm, or a misbehaving add-in. Work
through these steps to see if one of them works:

- Go to the folder %appdata%\Microsoft\Templates and rename the Normal.dotm file
to something else, such as OldNormal.dotm. Restart Word (without Safe Mode),
which will build a new factory-default copy of the template. If that doesn't
help, close Word; delete the new Normal.dotm; and rename OldNormal.dotm back to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data

Data icon and click Rename. Change it to OldData. Restart Word, which will build

bottom left, it specifically says, "This modification is not allowed because
the selection is locked. How can I unlock the selection?

Here's my new problem now I'm currently witnessing now:

1) Cannot type in a blank Microsoft Office Word 2007 because selection is
lock. So, that means I cannot even write anything, save it, and open it with
the top that will say, "Compatibility Mode." Cannot type anything, at all.

2) On the top left, when I click the circular symbol, everything that's
highlighted (or should I say colored) are only the "Open", "Print", and
"Close" option. Anything else I cannot touch/won't allow me to.

I will be waiting for your response, hopefully you can break everything down
for me and fix this problem. Why did I accidently clicked something,
everything was so fine when I was finishing my essay.

This suggests that Word is a trial version that has expired or, if a retail
version, has not been activated.

you please further explain what you've said. First of all, everything was
fine with my Wordpad. Sure there are 'trail versions', etc., but I haven't
deal with this for the longest time now - it was basically nothing really.
Whenever I had something to write, I go on Wordpad save and go back. Back and
forth, with no problems.

The reason why this finally occurred because I mistakenly right clicked and
then clicked on something. No time periods, activations, none of that. The
problem is that I probably clicked "Save As" (?) or another option and this
thing happened.

I highly doubt (well not really), it has to deal with it being expired nor
activated. Last thing on my mind would be those two, really. I simply just
right clicked and was meaning to click save only, but I guess clicked the
wrong option. That's all.

On another note, I clicked on the Q's box and type in Compatibility and
nothing really was helpful to me. One comment said the same problem I'm
having, and didn't know what to do with the information they provided.

That being said, we are in NEED of help here.

Anyone who had this problem before, please chime in. Any input/advice will
be highly appreciated.

Computers that include Office 2007, unless you have paid extra for a full
version of Office, include a time limited trial version of Office. When the
trial has finished, so has your ability to use the application. You must now
buy a copy of Office if you wish to continue using it.

If you have paid for a full version of Office then you must activate it. You
do this from the Office Button > Word Options > Resources.

WordPad is not a time limited application, but part of Windows and does not
have such limitations.

I have not paid anything what-so-ever, not a single penny.

If you say it has expired or unactivated then tell me, why hasn't my
sister's word hasn't overcome the same problem? Didn't trial periods I'm not
aware of? We did buy the same laptops, at the same time.

I'm telling you, I accidently/mistakenly clicked on something. I think
that's the problem why I'm facing this. But who knows?

Is there any place I can go to, to get it fixed? I'm lost in so many levels.

If you have not paid, then you don't have a fully functioning version but
instead a trial version, and it probably has expired. Your sister may not
have used hers as soon as you did; hers may expire tomorrow or the next day.

Also, I'm not sure what the activation policy is on the trial version, but
on the retail version, you get 50 (I think it is) uses before you have to
activate; if this is true of the trial version as well, it may be that you
have used yours more times than your sister has hers.

You're probably right about that. I have used it more times than my sister
has. She probably opened at least maybe 5 times, if I can recall. I'm quite
lazy to write, and she isn't. I tend to use the Word a lot while she would
rather write in paper.

Probably that is the answer to my problem. Anything I can do to get it back
running without paying anything? Download a free version? I don't know much

If, as we suspect, the problem is an expired trial version, then you really
have no alternative but to pay for a retail copy. If you don't need Outlook,
the Home & Student Edition is the most economical. Be sure to uninstall the
trial before installing the new version.
