Hello,

When pasting an object (e.g. JPG picture) into a Word 2002 sheet, I see
only an empty frame rather than the picture itself.
If I change the layout via the Format Menue and Picture, suddenly the
picture can be seen.
It may disappear later again when switching temporarily to another
application, but reappears after only starting to type.

If I start Word by Using the /a Switch in accordance with
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/289634/EN-US/
the problem is gone.

I got some help in a German Newsgroup without success.
What I did so far was the following:

Checked certain Startup entries to be empty. I also tried with someones
help to search for Com-Add-Ins, but to no avail:

WD2002: Some COM Add-Ins Are Not Listed in COM Add-Ins
Dialog Box
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307479/en-us

How to run the sample code for the Office XP programs from
Knowledge Base articles
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290140/EN-US/

Does anybody know how to procede from her?
I am using Word 2002, SP3

Thanks
Hans

Hi Hans,

Trouble with displaying graphics is often caused by the video driver.

First try reducing the video hardware acceleration. In Start > Settings >
Control Panel > Display, on the Settings tab, click the Advanced button. In
the next dialog, select the Troubleshooting tab. Move the acceleration
slider toward the None position, and click the Apply button. Try working
with pictures in Word. If the problem is still there, move the slider more
and try again. Continue until the problem goes away or the slider is all the
way to the left.

For a more permanent fix, it may be possible to get an update of the video
driver from the manufacturer of your display card -- check the appropriate
web site.

It took 3 slider steps to the left, and the problem was gone.
This is like magic, one posting and a single answer, and the problem is
resolved, or understood, at least.

This is a brand new X20 notebook from Samsung. Is it possible that

Excellent! I'm glad it helped.

Yes, it's possible. The manufacturing and distribution process take time, so
your new notebook could be configured with software that's at least several
months old. There have been cases in which there were updated drivers on the
web before the hardware was ever sold.

Jay,

sorry to bother you again.

If I leave the slider 3 steps left, I encounter problems with
applications like Google Earth. It hangs with a message aout DirectX
mode problems.
When I move the slider to the write everything works fine. I found an
extensive DirectX Test which also executed without problems.

So I worked my way through the various documents and found the
following:

2. My Notebook uses the Intel(R) 915GM/GMS, 910GML Express chip set,
and the Graphics Media Accelerator Driver 6.14.10.3943
The actual version being advertised by Intel is 6.14.10.4363
I also found a list of unresolved problems with this driver which is
pritty long.

I have downloaded the actual driver version 6.14.10.4363 as file
win2k_xp1415.exe to my desktop. I have no idea how to install the new
driver. I am scared that things go worse than they are and I don't know
how to fix it.

Can you give me any further advice?

Thanks again!

Hi Hans,

I don't have much advice, as I don't have the same hardware or any
personal experience with upgrading Intel video drivers.

At least one other poster seems to have gotten the same advice from HP
for his system:
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.word.drawing.graphics/browse_frm/thread/506b86f2479fc4e5/faa6f50ecc2f24ff?lnk=st&q=intel+915gm+video+problems+group:microsoft.public.*&rnum=2&hl=en#faa6f50ecc2f24ff

Do make sure you get the latest DirectX version from
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx?url=/windows/directx/downloads/default.htm.
Don't follow the HP link in the newsgroup post, though -- it leads to
a download page for 6.14.10.3992. Instead, use the Intel download you
already have.

I did read through all the "known issues" in Intel's list that apply
to the 915GM chipset, and none of them appear to be anything of a
serious nature (unless you intend to view high-definition TV on your
laptop). Most of them concern minor oddities in the configuration
dialogs displayed by the driver.

The installation instructions are in the file ReadMe.txt, which you
can download from the same web page where you got the driver. As for
being afraid that something will go wrong, I can't help with that. You
might take the laptop to a computer technician and trust their
expertise, or you might decide to live with the problem as it is.
