Remote Desk Top vs VPN

Novice to Remote Desktop / VPN connections...
1st... Do I establish VPN connection, then Remote Desk top or do they
operate independently?

Remote Desktop: confused with under Logon settings, in the User name box,
verify that your user name is correct.

User name?? computer name?
Domain?? we don't have a server... we have an office network... is that the
domain? domain//mycomputername?

Available computers.... how do I get my office computer to show up in this
area?

You don't need to establish a VPN in order to use Remote Desktop although
some folks do run Remote Desktop through a VPN or Secure Shell (SSH) tunnel
for added security or easy access to more than one PC without opening
numerous holes in a firewall.

User name and password are local to the PC your trying to connect to. You
may or may not need to log onto an office domain. Contact the office network
administrators about that.

If your in a domain environment you can browse for other XP Pro PCs running
Remote Desktop or Windows 2003/2000 Terminal Servers. If your in a work
group, ie. not in a domain, you can not normally browse unless you apply a
registry hack to each XP Pro PC. In the case of a work group simply call the
PC you want to connect to using its private static LAN IP address.

If your outside your office LAN then you need to have TCP Port 3389 open on
any firewall to the private static LAN IP for the PC you want to connect to.
Call using the public IP of the firewall...

Al,

I'm trying to connect to my home PC (XP Pro with Remote Desktop set up to
allow remote access/control) from my office network running on Win2K. My home
ISP is Cox and they gave me the public IP address supposedly. Any chance you
can give me the step-by-step I need to accomplish this? I've tried the
Terminal Services Connection wizard from work to no avail. ALL HELP
APPREICATED! Thanks,

Its also possible your office network administrators block TCP Port 3389
outbound. You might need to check with them about that. Also note that your
office may have policies about connecting a trusted network (your office) to
an untrusted network (your home).
