XP.SP2-MCE - "no updates pending"
Can someone execute these instructions, and relay their
results?
1). Open the fax console.
1.1). Select tools, and choose fax monitor.
2). Return to the fax console.
3). Select file and choose send a fax.
4). Select next.
5). Recipient Information:
5.1). Enter "test" for "to".
5.2). Enter your own phone # for the "fax number",
in the form of 800-555-1212.
6). Select next.
7). Preparing the cover page:
7.1). Enter "test" for subject line.
8). Select next.
9). Schedule:
10). Select next.
11). Positioning the fax monitor pane for clear view,
select finish on the "Completing the send fax wizard".
Now, returning to the fax console pane, is your fax shown
in either the outbox folder or the sent folder?
1). I've got nothing - in any fax console folders.
2). I had no activity in the fax monitor.
3). I was expecting a busy line.
4). I had no fax service audio.
This fax is one of those things I seldom use, but I'm sure
this little test worked a few months back. However, I'm
always up to the minute on updates. Maybe one of those
updates corrupted the fax operation?
When this previously worked, I:
1). Saw modem setup via fax monitor.
2). Heard the dial sequence via speaker.
3). Always received the failure, either due to busy, or
due to dial without carrier(no tone detected).
4. And, depending on the previous operation(s), the fax
cover page would reside in either the sent or outbox
folders.
I'm actually researching a low DSR issue, and using this
and other tests for demonstration for the telco technician.
Thank you,
Gary
There's no tools>options on the fax console. The tools
selection on my fax console consists of:
1). Sender Information - "correct".
2). Personal Cover Pages - "empty".
3). Fax Printers Status - "local - online".
4). Configure Fax - "the multi-panel configuration wizard".
Been through here 100's of times, all looks fine.
5). Fax Printer Configuration - "Various panels for fax
input/output storage. Additionally shows a device
section showing my modem as send/receive enabled".
6). Fax Monitor - "real time fax progress, initial status
looks fine with a ready to send/receive fax notation".
Administrative>Services>Fax = Autostart, Started.
The numerically stepped process I initially described runs
exactly as written. The first problem is there is never any
entry pending in the fax console's outbox folder. Even if
the fax service were to initiate the dial, failure is imminent
due to the intended busy. This would normally retain the
fax entry in outbox for either retry or manual resend. A
successful/completed fax would retain the entry in the
sent folder.
At least that's the way it used to operate....
Thanks - Gary

Coincidentally, a hardware update has just arrived for a
Conexant Systems PCI Soft Data Fax Modem with
SmartCP, which is exactly my modem(although I've
temporarily added another external for diagnosis).
There's not much info on this update(read none), and
even if it were to correct my low DSR problem, I don't
think it's going to affect the events described in this
initial post.
Nonetheless, as always, I'll apply the update whether
necessary or not.
