This is a story about Joan and John and their two computers. They have
an XP Pro and an XP Home computer. Joan and John are both
administrators on both computers. When John clicks on My Network Places
and clicks View Workgroup Computers, he sees the shared folders on the
other computer. This works for John on both computers. When Joan tries
the same, she gets the dreaded Mshome is not accessible, because, it
says, she doesn't have permission, she should contact the administrator
(that's me), and then, the list of servers for this workgroup is not
currently available. (By the way, this administrator has no bleeping
idea what that last part means, nor how to check for further
permissions.)

So John read many web pages on how to solve this problem. Turn off
that firewall, they said. John did so even though that same firewall
didn't bother his file sharing abilities. Enable Netbios over TCP/IP,
they said. John did so. Make sure that Computer Browser is running in
services, they said. John did so. Use only one protocol. Ditto and
etc.

After much such mucking around, Joan still cannot see the other
computer from either machine. However, something did change. Now when
John click View Workgroup Computers, he gets Mshome is not accessible.
So this is when John got very angry and decided to take his problem to
the internet. And here he is.

Here I got a fix to your problem.

Run local security policy editor from control panel admin tools and set the
local policy, Network Access: Let everyone permissions apply to anonymous
users, to enabled and make sure guest account is enabled

on xp pro machine go to start settings control panel and click on
administrative
tools and then local security policy

Security Settings

Sharing Mode- Change this to "Classic Mode - Local users Authenticate as
Themselves" (as opposed to "Guest only" the default model)

this fix will be applied after a restart

See:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/proddocs/506.asp?frame=true

this should fix your problem.

It it does not try running the windows xp home networking wizard and create
a disc to run on the other pc the xp home pc.

go into my network places on the desktop and on the right side of window
under network tasks click setup a home or small office network and that will
run the wizard.

That should fix your problem. Ok Thanks

Reply back and let me know how it goes. Don't forget to select yes if this
was helpful on my post. I always like helping out people with there problems.
Thanks

The first thing I'd do is re-run the network setup wizard on both machines.
That will re-set most of the settings correctly.

Specifically, you should direct the wizard to enable F+P sharing.
This should:
enable the firewall;
enable the F+P sharing exception;
Start the browser service.

If that doesn't work, then we need to start doing stuff manually,
starting with diagnostics of what works and what doesn't.

Incidentally, if it's just the browser system that's broken, you may be able
to contace the other machine directly, by going to Start | Run and typing
\\name-of-other-machine in the Run box.

To answer your question about what the error actually means:

>the list of servers for this workgroup is not
> currently available.

When you look in 'View Workgroup Computers', you are viewing something
called the Browse List. This is maintained by one computer on the
network, called the Master Browser. The computers elect one of their
number to be Msster Browser automatically.

This error indicates that your PC called out on the network for the master
browser, but no reply came back. So it was was unable to locate the master
browser for the workgroup. There can be several reasons for this: Firewall
misconfiguration preventing the master browser from being reachable is
common; There may not be a Master Browser running because the Browser
service may not be running on the machines, etc, etc. The wizard will
correct most of these issues.

Matthew, Thank you for your note. The good news is that I can again
share files between computers. The bad news is that the View Workgroup
Computers is still broken.

As you suggested, I looked at the local policies. This setting was
already enabled: "Network Access: Let everyone permissions apply to
anonymous users". The Guess account was turned off, but unfortunately,
turning it on did not improve file sharing. So I turned the Guest
account back off.

Also, the XP Pro machine was already set to your suggested "Classic
Mode - Local Users Authenticate as Themselves.

Running the network wizard on each machine also did not fix the
problem. I did create the floppy, as the network wizard seemed to
encourage. But when I ran that floppy-based wizard on the other PC
with XP Home, it was the exact same wizard available there under My
Network Places. I'm not really sure why this extra floppy step was
necessary.

But at least I'm sharing files again. I'm using the technique
suggested by another poster to simply type \\MachineName into the Run
box. For some reason. it takes a little longer, but after about 20
seconds, the explorer pops up with the other computers content. This
works on both machines for all users.

Thanks for your help.

Ron, while my View Workgroup Computers is still broken, your suggestion
to type the machine name into the run box made file sharing work. This
is certainly a good enough fix for now.

It does seem that the computer browser feature is broken. But I
checked both computers and the computer browser is running on both
computers.

I also re-ran the home-network setup wizard on both computers. This

did not fix the problem.

I'm running Norton anti-virus on both computers. While disabling this
did not fix anything, it is a point of suspicion. Norton once blocked
access to my IIS which took me weeks to find and fix.

So, most importantly, we're sharing files again thanks to your
suggestion. We are very grateful.
