Audio clicks on video clip transitions on rendered DV-AVI

Here is a situation that made me sit back and go "Huh!" I was making a
"trailer" for a DVD of my daughter's high school musical. Each video
clip in the trailer was around a second duration and no more than 2
seconds and the video lasted about 48 seconds. All of the editing was
done with WMM2.1. I muted the audio for each individual clip and added
one music clip to the audio/music track. When I rendered the movie to
a DV-AVI format file, on SOME video clip transitions you would get an
audible click. There was no click when in WMM. When I muted even the
music track, I got no clicks in the resultant movie file. There are no
video transitions like fades or anything else, each video transition
is a straight cut. All of the video clips were shot on a consumer
video camera and imported through firewire by WinDV. There were no
clicks in the rendered video files of these clips. My hard drive was
defragged so I know it wasn't from that.

I found a work around, ugly, but it worked. I used VirtualDub to
remove the audio with the clicks and created a new DV-AVI file.. Then,
with a new WMM project, I imported the audio-less video file and added
the music file. The resultant video had click-less audio. I have a
feeling I could have used the clicking audio video file in the new
project, muted the audio attached to the video, and then added the
music to the music track and all would have been well, also. I didn't
try that.

So the big question is, "When going from a straight cut from one video
clip to another with their audio clips muted, cause a loud click from
audio in the music track when rendering a DV-AVI?"

Sometimes rendering to DV-AVI does cause this "click" and sometimes it
doesn't depending, I think, on the audio.
An easier workaround is to render the project as a High Quality NTSC/PAL
Video which "should" eliminate the click
then mute the audio and render again as a DV-AVI.
Last step is to import both the new DV-AVI and the WMV files. Drag the AVI
to the video part of the timeline and
drag the WMV to the audio part and render your final version as a DV-AVI
without the "clicks"

Thanks for your help. I'm glad someone else has seen (or should I say
heard) these clicks and pops rendering to DV-AVI. I like your
solution, it is a little easier than mine. My next big project is
doing a DVD of an Eagle Court of Honor, and I don't want any audio or
video flubs, so I will be VERY careful.
