When you click the Desktop toolbar chevron, it enumerates the list of shell
folders, just as Windows Explorer does. The only way (afaik) to hide the "My
Network Places" icon from the Desktop toolbar is to edit a registry value.

Note that the following registry edit hides the "My Network Places" icon
from the Desktop, Windows Explorer / shell.

Open Regedit.exe and navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\NonEnum

In the right pane, create a new REG_DWORD value named
"{208D2C60-3AEA-1069-A2D7-08002B30309D}", and set its value data to
0x00000001

Close Regedit.exe. Changes are usually instantaneous, thus requiring no
reboot.
